I never driven an HST, but in my mine I would think it's nearly impossible to flip over an HST when not set on cruse.

I think the same thing but... If someone asks on TBN that's not what they a hammered with. :confused3: Lots of people with more experience than me so I'm looking to understand better.

BS. My HST will pull every ounce as hard as the same model geared with equal tires. Although I don't think you'd flip either model.

I think he was MOSTLY trying to get a rise out of someone. Success! Lol. :drink:

And with the low gearing and a foot throttle on modern gear models I'm betting its not likely.

You might have a point there, my Father's 48 Case wasn't as low gear as my L3400dt, and with PTO winch it cant come over because the winch push plate will hit the ground and that's as far as it will go.

A repeated story, once upon a time 40 years ago I was pulling a tree out of the woods in the fall with a 1948ish Case, 30hp or so, and coming up near the house there was a small piece of wood froze in the ground, the tractor went over it fine in 1st. gear, but the tree I was dragging on the ground come against it, stopped the tree, the tractor came up and over so fast that I had barely enough time to jump, the tractor had some damage.

Definitely scarry and dangerous stuff. I think that is why It's become recycled dogma on TBN?.. Or I'm wrong about the real risk.

Where on the tractor were you tied off?

I have a hook welded on the top of my boxblade. When pulling from the hook with the 3 point hitch fully raised the tractor spins out before the front lifts. With the loader removed the outcome might be different.

The only time I have ever heard of a tractor flipping was a 1070 Case back in the '70s where a guy was plowing and came to the end with an almost non-existent ditch but a little rise onto a country road. he was plowing right up to the road and then turning on the road but when his front end went up the rise the 3 pt pulled in farther which brought the tractor over on the plow. It was a cabbed tractor so the operator was in the cab and got hurt but not real serious.

I did see my cousin flip an IH M narrow front one time going up a silage pile even though it was not real steep. He dived off to left in front of the rear wheel while the tractor went on over.

At the end of the day, please remember if it can happen it WILL happen to someone.

Usually not...but bad luck if it is you.

Take your chances...best option is doing things that offer zero chance of bad things happening. Pulling from the draw bar which is below the rear axle eliminates the possibility of a back flip. Pull from above the axle, well take your chances. Perhaps 99.9% of the time nothing bad happens.

But people win the lotto when the odds against it are VERY much greater than that.

Do what you like and hope for the best...

Well for goodness sake don't get into a car! Certainly not on the highway! Much more likely to lead to death or injury.
Human are extremely poor at assesing risk. There's actually a whole bunch of really interesting research on this.

Here's one for the safety police.

I have not personally witnessed a modern HST tractor go over while pulling from the hitch. I have run several incidents with this happening with older geared farm sized tractors.
What I will say is that the operator cannot rely on making a control change to prevent a catastrophe once it is in the process of happening. The human brain does not always respond like you would think.. while a machine is coming over and panic strikes, it is very likely any foot controls will be pushed hard.
So..... My take on the topic is that I would have a hard time seeing my 4060 going over without involving an incline also, but I do not tempt fate.
