Thanks for the experience and guidance. I hate being ignorant but you speak of " wind rolled back and forth " and "roll a windrow back and forth, lay it down in smooth lifts " and I am not sure I understand specifically what you are recommending and whether I need something other than a grader blade to do it.

Using a blade set at an angle to move a ridge of dirt sideways. In this process the ridge of dirt gets mixed up and will compact better. While rolling the ridge of dirt back and forth it gets evened out and when the dirt is spread on the road you end up with a smooth surface. A road grader is ideal for this. The grader blade angles to travell direction, tips backward or forward and also tips side to side. All these actions are used by the operator to do a proper job.

A back blade with gauge wheels will sort of work.

Thanks for the education. I have an double sided blade without gage wheels. Can gage wheels be added. Does anybody make a kit to add them?

Thanks for the detailed info. Was that one truck load and a pretty long delivery?

Yes...1 truck load. I had a 100 ft x 12 ft circle drive i was finishing 1.5 inch thick. Used some of it also for some pot holes in our main rd. I had about 3 tons left !

About a mile from a Vulcan plant. How long after a rain do I need to wait. Is this any rain (shower) or a heavier rain? Thanks for your help.

Around here many quarries sprinkle their materials in the storage piles. They claim it is to cut down on dust, which is certainly true, but it also means they weigh water along with the stone they are selling.

If I have today to work on my driveway and it rained yesterday, I am still going to order gravel. I might pay for 2-3% water by weight, but if I don't get it today, who knows when I will have the time to fix the driveway? It is just the breaks of the game.

If a $400 load has $12 worth of water that should have been gravel, that is a small price to pay for getting the material on the day I want it.

Thanks for the thought. I may n3ot be as schedule driven as you are and can juggle my schedule some. But as you point out, $12 isn't a big deal in the scheme of things

I am a retired old geezer, but if my buddy wants to go fishing on Wednesday and I have Tuesday to work on the driveway that alone is worth $12.

P.S. He has a boat.

More agreement on the crusher run here- we use #2 CR when the driveway start to wear down and get pot holes, and then top it with #1 CR and roll it.

We have a 1000 foot driveway, and i used to go and get 2-3 tons at a time in our F-359, and spread it by hand, but that and I got old real quick, so after about 17 years of it [with one "professional" job done for cost as a favor about 10 years into it, including regrading it with a big dozer],.

Having the gravel delivered and spreading it with the loader and box blade is just so much easier, but I have to admit I had more control with the hand shovel.

We find that it packs just fine by driving on it, but rolling it speeds the process, and keeps some of the more aggressive drivers among my family from spraying it all over.

Apparently the #1 and #2 designate the largest "average size" of the larger pieces, which doesn't make much sense statistically, but seems to work, and because it isn't washed, all the stone dust and sand are included and after it gets wet, it really locks down.

Yes you can. Do a search on this site.

Gravel size may be determined by the largest screen it goes thru.
