Not knowing anything about mills but wanting to learn...

What is the difference between manual and hydraulic?

Is it how the log advances?

Do you need to get the lumber graded in order to use if for construction?

The log stays stationary and the "head" moves the blade through the log.

Band saw mills can have almost all of their operations done with hydraulics. Some of these functions include loading the log, rolling the log, leveling the log front to back to make up for taper, clamping the log in position, raising and lowering the blade and advancing the head along the carriage.

To build residences to code, yes the lumber must be graded. A feller can get certified in grading pretty easily if he's so inclined.

It's a manual mill from Norwood Industries, made in Canada...

It's been a GREAT mill, I've milled a lot of lumber with it,

Accuracy it great too,

and it stays in "tune", so I'm happy with it.

Nice mill SR. Norwoods are great mills.

Have access to an EZ Boardwalk. It's not nearly as accurate as the Norwood mills I've been around.

I have a lot of Oak in California that is Live or Coastal Oak... not much value for lumber because almost nothing grows straight.

In Washington I do have some fir and cedar and it is not unusual for someone to mill lumber onsite for personal use.

if you are building and do not need a loan then I believe you can build with rough lumber here. I believe the bank requires graded lumber.

My neighbor had some ash trees that needed taken down. Me and my Dad worked on them in the evenings. When I get to working I forget to take pictures. My Dad cut the trees down then cut the brush off of then. Then I took the L4240 with grapple and moved the trees out of the way and pushed the brush out of the field. Then we worked the trees up. I think there were 5 but I forgot to take pics of them all.



Starting to get a load.



This was everything from the field.





This stuff here was all cut down in random lengths by the tree company clearing the power line ROW. It was all laying up on the bank and I threw most of it down, then cut it up.There were a couple logs that we pulled down the BX. It was a good bit of work but it made a nice pile.

Here are all 3 loads dumped.



I am hoping there are 3 cords there but I think I might little less.

Nice loads and work!

I see that you use both a log hook and a pickeroon [or hookeroon], how well do you like the log hook?

We love our pickeroon, but haven't had as much luck with using any of the available hooks we have tried.

If you like yours, would you mind sharing who makes it?
