You can't shoot a coon which is the most humane option, but poisoning or trapping and then drowning them is okay??? Whatever floats her boat.

Interesting it seems in Indiana you can humane trap them on your own property and then kill them. You have to inform a conservation officer when you do. However if you hunt them w/o trapping first (or do it on someone's property) you need a permit.

Hmmm..... I can't find anywhere in the Indiana DNR site that says you have to inform a conservation officer.
From this site:
DNR: Raccoon

"Resident landowners and tenants can live-trap a raccoon that is causing damage on their own property without a permit from the DNR. The raccoon must be euthanized or released within the county of capture on property in which you have permission to do so. In order to prevent the spread of disease, the DNR encourages homeowners to safely and humanely euthanize the raccoons, if possible. Live-traps can be purchased from hardware stores and garden centers. If you do not want to trap the raccoon yourself, contact a licensed nuisance wild animal control operator."

As far as releasing "in a wooded area" That's just giving the head ache to someone you don't even know.

That and IT DOESN"T WORK! Five miles is an overnight jaunt for a coon missing "his turf".

DTDT I've got the Tee shirt.

If you hunt/trap them, that means hunting/trapping. There is a very specific season for hunting/trapping raccoons in Indiana. Don't confuse hunting/trapping raccoons with controlling nuisance raccoons. Its not the same. Hunting/trapping out of season will get you a hefty fine while controlling nuisance animals within the law will not.

Never use the word "hunt" when controlling nuisance raccoons. ;)

I will "hunt" down "nuisance" raccoons. They can be more of a problem then bears here. A couple days ago I was in the house and just happened to look out the door and saw a young (2 yr old maybe) bear about 8 ft from the door looking in at me. After maybe 20 sec. he/she turned around and moseyed back into the woods. Must have been passing through because i haven't seen it since.

One the other hand, I saw a pretty good size coon eyeing up my hummingbird feeders on the front porch the other nite. Went out to chase it off and it snarled & hissed at me...... hence "coon down" !!!!

We can eliminate nuisance animals here without any fuss like I see in other states. I do keep a current small game license also.

When I dispose of a coon, I always wear nitrate rubber gloves when handling them.

I live trap and .22 to the head. Open trap, dump coon in pile of dead ones next to trap, repeat next night. Marshmallows or eggs are best bait. They are easy for them to see at night which fuels their curiosity and they love eating them. Smelly baits especially fishy smelling like tuna are a very bad idea unless you like dealing with skunks which rely on smells much more than coons. Relocating a coon is very ignorant. Also if you want to drop the bomb on them put a pan of golden malrin out for them (check local laws) that can wipe out a wheelbarrow load in one night.-so I've heard

My preference would be live trap and bullet to the head. Where the horses are now the owner will not permit that. I think she would permit us to trap and "release". Of course I would not tell her the release would be to the bottom of a pond, were it my choice.

When we have our place it will be life trap and bullet to the head when the Mrs has her back turned. Will she care? Probably. Will she say anything... probably not because she will be glad it is gone. They carry disease that is bad for the horses. Otherwise would live and let live.

Also a good excuse for me to get a .22 rifle with a scope to go after other nuisance animals.

Reading up on poisoning them.... it seems to be very cruel as they take days to die. While I do not like them and want them gone, I am not going to torture them.

To me, it would be hard to get more cruel than drowning!!

Drowning doesn't appear cruel because no one stands there and watches the animal suffer. I was a lifeguard for many years. I'd wish that fate on no person or animal. Just shoot it. If you can't shoot it, take it somewhere where you can shoot it. Or take it somewhere where you have permission to let it go. Just don't make it suffer needlessly because its an inconvenience to take the time to drive it somewhere else and dispatch it humanely. Even easier.... just remove the food source! They'll go away on their own. ;)

They won't make it 15' or 15 minutes after they eat that and they love it.
