Trapping and relocation doesn't work.....in San Diego. I wonder why it works in other places? :)

From:
Facts | San Diego Humane Animal Removal

"In addition, if you trap an animal you either have to release it within 100 feet of where you caught it or kill the animal. Just trapping and releasing will not solve your problem."

Maybe Illinois, too:
Raccoons infest storage unit, and company won't pay for damage - Chicago Tribune - Discussion on Topix

"It is NOT legal in Illinois to trap and relocate a raccoon unless you release it within 100 feet of where you trapped it."

Trap them and then shoot them.

I live trapped 21 of them on my property last October and have not seen another one since. I gave a few to a friend who lives a few miles away and likes to keep them around and feed them. I gave the rest to old-timers who like to feed on them.

When we get our barn built, trap and shoot will be the order of the day. I currently we board our horses at another facility. Facility owner will not go for trap and shoot. I suspect I could get away with trap and see if they know how to swim.

Your cheap honey buns are great for live traps, used them in the garden for years. I'm not against killing a pest, we have encroached on them bad enough that they have nowhere else to go, so i give some a fair chance, other's aren't so lucky.
I like the paint idea.

In MA, Raccoons, Oppossem, Skunk, etc. are considered "nusence animals" and you cannot trap and re-locate. They must be euthanised. If you get caught releasing them, it is a $1000.00 fine. I trap, shoot, leave for the Cyotes.

I have trapped them and given them to locals who raise coon dogs. They like to have them to help train their dogs.
