I assume? everyone knows why hogs roll in the mud??? Since they do not perspire, they have to do that to cool; heat will kill them. They'll stay clean if you have them on a wood or concrete floor and a sprinkler system to keep them cool. Bird

True.

I grew up raising hogs. Yes they will eat anything but gain faster and have higher quality meat on grain. I don't agree that flavor is better on foraging diet. They prefer being wet and dirty. As they grow they will test your fences and your patience. They are smart, stubborn and persistent.

Totally agree with you.

Quote: I remember from my time in Europe the most expensive pork was that fed a diet of acorns... don't know what else was in the feed but acorn fed was always the most expensive. Ultrarunner.

It still is.Obviously they only eat acorns in the autumn when they fall off the trees, so are fed conventional maize based diets the rest of the time. These pigs are usually also black skinned, and both that and the "acorn" diet are very successful marketing ploys. There are a few varieties of oaks across Europe but here and in Spain they make the special claim that those in amongst cork oaks are the best. Personally I prefer a quick grown white pig for flavour.

OMG, so all these years the term "sweating like a pig" was just......?

And I suppose there is no Tooth Fairy" either?😬😰

Oh yes there is a tooth fairy, the collect pigs teeth. Along that line was told years ago there is chemical naturally occurring in our deep water the best way to get ride of was with ground pig teeth...do not think it caught on.

Along this line this may be a tale but was told years ago the reason Smithfield Hams taste the way they do is their hogs are feed a peanut diet to get that taste. Below is copied from Wikipedia and in the nest line it reads in 1996 they dropped the line on peanuts. Have not checked on this but was told a few years ago Smithfield company was sold to company in former communist Europe and is now owned by a Chinese company.

"The state of Virginia first regulated usage of the term "Smithfield Ham" in a 1926 Statute passed by its General Assembly stating:

Genuine Smithfield hams [are those] cut from the carcasses of peanut-fed hogs, raised in the peanut-belt of the Commonwealth of Virginia or the State of North Carolina, and which are cured, treated, smoked, and processed in the town of Smithfield, in the Commonwealth of Virginia."

Didn't know about Smithfield hams but growing up I always heard people talk about Virginia ham and I am in California.

And I'm in Texas, but used to have good friends and neighbors who came from Virginia and they liked those Virginia (salt cured and very dry) hams.

Thank you. This morning was my 23rd session of cardiac rehab; 13 to go. And I'd say all's well except for my arms looking terrible. I'm told that's a result of the blood thinner the doctor has me taking, so it looks a bit like huge bruises on my arms when I hadn't done anything to bruise them. But I am cutting back on medications a bit; cut two out, one cut in half. and a fourth one will end in another week or so.

And I hope all's going well for you, too.

So I've kept up on this thread and appreciate all the input.

I will say they are really smart, I'm the only one that's been feeding them and I'm not sure if they can see me but every time I go check on the garden they rush the fence about 100' away and let me know it's time to feed them.

Bird, You have to keep going, you are one of the few folks on here that I look to having posted something on a thead that interests me. The reason is, you talk sense, and there is not too much of that about these days.

There are a few more old timers about, will not list them because I am surre to forget somebody, but just like you to know, I appreciate your input from a foreign land. Foreign info (as in USA and other places) is always a lot more beneficial than local info.
