Anyone know if they have fixed the problems with the 3500 series? I don't know much about the 5500s. Increasing your market share of unhappy customers doesn't sound like a winning strategy in my opinion.

I've got one of the "problem" 35 series you speak of. An original 4035. After a half dozen well known/easily fixed issues are addressed, it is as reliable as a hammer. I'd make my purchase again.

Knowing nothing about tractors and buying a first time tractor can be a daunting task and the dealers from different types of tractors can be a big help. Just like on this forum, people ask what kind to get and you will get a whole rage of responses. Then the prospective buyer must wade through the information and see what is right for him.

Same with talking to various dealers. I like to a point dealers explaining advantages or disadvantages of different models and have been in the past been swayed for or against a series because of his presentation.

Understanding his commission will make one wary of certain models, but these models may be just what you need, but you don't know it yet. If he keeps on pushing a model you certainly don't want, just tell him. He would probably take a lower commission to keep a customer happy than no commission at all.

There's another side to this story. Guys coming into the dealer and wanting to go cheap. An experienced dealer can and should attempt to encourage the customer to buy a bigger tractor if the needs outlined by the buyer clearly indicate it. In my searching I've heard several such stories from various dealers. Unrelated to the tractors I was interested in btw. When they don't listen they end up with broken tractors or the need to upgrade and of course an unhappy customer. I saw one instance unfold in front of me. A guy came in while I was there who had a tractor in mind, a small hst model and wanted to run a big rotating brush on the front. From my own research I was pretty sure the hydraulics on the tractor couldn't handle the brush. No idea how it turned out but the dealer did mention he was going to have to get a better idea of his needs and probably recommend a bigger tractor.

the guy i went to was trying to get me into the emax 24. I wanted that extra 1 hp - sound weird but i did; and i also wanted the max series. wanted the 25 - he had to go out and contact another dealer. Got what i wanted. he also was pushing the back end mower because he did not know how to put on a midmower - yes he had and still has no clue. i wanted midmower. i ended up going to a dealer farther away who was a serious dealer for servicing etc, vs. the first guys part-time/quarter-time sales and minimal servicing staff's ability. For what it's worth.

It sounds like you made the right decision to me. If the dealer isn't serious about your being happy and satisfied with what you buy then why should you be serious about buying anything from him. I never waste much of my time at places like that choosing to spend it where it will do me the most good.

Your choice of mower is your own to make, but your dealer was probably going with what guys are telling him, the MMM is not the better option vs. a 3 pt. mounted finish mower. I had two different dealer advise against it when I was tractor shopping. It's not a money thing, the mid mount is usually more expensive. After using my eMax with a Maschio finish mower, they were right.

he was pushing me toward that because he never saw one or sold one and also did not know how to hook it up/mount it - he had to find one already on a max 25 - so i knew then he was not the sharpest tool in the shed. it cuts nice for me. too by the way. I am pleased. also you do not know my property layout with 100 plus trees and garden and vineyard and beds etc.

I have two chainsaw sales and repair shops in town, Stihl and Echo. I have no problem with either brands. I was looking for something to add to my current 45 and 55 CC saws. Both places are pushing the cheaper 60 cc approx saw in their line as the ones all the loggers in the area get and are satisfied with, and they have no problems with them. .

My problem is I am not sure what I want but I want a saw that screams and am not sure those two models do, because IO never ran one. I just found it interesting becasue it seems these dealers are looking out for the interest of the buying party. Why push a $400 saw when I am talking myself into a $700 saw?:confused3::confused3:

An important part of being a salesman is knowing when to shut up... ;)
