Is it time for a gasoline engine tractor?

Gee- sometimes I'm glad I have a (cheap) chinese tractor- since the hp ratings are arrived at by operating the engine @ rated power for 12 hours straight...
Don't recall any 30 minute owners manual limitation on either of my tractors pto run time @ rated power?..?

Mowing large fields over grown with Tanzi that was over the tractor hoods in 95 degree weather, in the highest gear that could be pulled without continually bogging the tractors engines for hours on end had to be running @ rated pto power .
Pretty sure there are others who work their tractors even harder with no ill effects?
Anyone else have that reference on the pto use??

That is interesting, I thought diesel tractors were all rated for continuous duty use.

I can remember mowing 7' tall weeds that i couldn't see over even if standing on the tractors running boards.

I could mow for 15-20 minutes at MAX throttle in 1st gear, then stop and reduce to idle while I peeled off a 2" thick layer of fluff-felt from the radiator, then max the throttle and keep going, and doing this for 5-6 hours straight. Or discing and cross discing a pasture till I ran out of fuel, refilled, gen had at it till it got dark.

Are new tractors not rated to do this? Who works for 30 minutes then stops?

Kubota makes one and Grasshopper offers it in their mowers... I hear it's a good engine, but compared to their diesels, it's waaay too thirsty!

SR

The gas option will be an old school low compression carburated aircooled. Not the ideal design for high efficiency.

How long does it take to dump the grain tank? Curious to know for how long JD allows that engine to be "flat out". Seems like the overboost function on high performance cars, but for a longer time. Unless they just crank the revs up a couple hundred rpm and open up the fuel injector pump. That's a 20% increase; could be boosting the turbo? Do they do that in tractor engines?

400 bushels in 105 seconds (3.8/sec). 26 or 28.5 feet of auger.
Numbers have changed a bit this year (all T4; non-T4 are slightly less):
543hp, boost by 50hp @ rated speed
507hp, boost to 580hp @ rated speed -100 rpm
540hp, boost to 617hp @ rated speed -200 rpm

Somehow I don't think Farmer John is going to dump a Hellcat engine in his combine to get that much hp. It would be interesting though to stick one in there and just see how long it lasted.

About as well as the 650HP Deere diesel installed in the Hellcat airframe. Two different design criteria .
Jay Leno had some custom built car with an aircraft/tank engine . Two large single barrel carbs and about 3mpg Leno had a jobber shop build a custom port fuel injection system. Fuel consumption was reduced while power and drive ability was improved. Leno's Tank Car Gets an Upgrade: Jay Leno's Garage

Man those weeds must shed a lot!
2" of build up in front of the Rad in that amount of time

- sounds like one long day of work for both the tractor and operator!

I agree on never buying a tractor that has rated power limitations on it...

and would also like to Know what brands / models have these limitations- Would make a Great Thread!!!

I always thought that the most efficient and effective way to run a diesel engine was to run it at full or nearly full power? Am I missing something?

Yeah, I agree. If they really wanted me to stop every half hour they should have put a half gallon fuel tank on it!

 airframe?
The Hellcat referenced previously is the Challenger/Charger car engine. and yes well aware of the Hellcat F6F aircraft by Grumman although with a top speed of 200mph+ some would consider that (flying) for a production automobile

I agree that there would still be a design criteria (difference)- actually the airplane engine is probably closer in design criteria in the sense it is probably a continuous duty @ rated power engine and with 2000 HP on tap it wouldn't be breathing hard @ even 1500hp

They were ripe ragweed and dog fennel, it was a miserable day. I had to pull up to the well each time it loaded up and peel off / blow out the radiator about every 15-12 minutes. nasty stuff.

I agree.. I'd love to know what limp wristed tractor brand/model has that limitation..

I couldn't even mow the ROW and easement in front of and along my property in 30 minutes, let alone the pastures themselves..
