I have the opportunity to borrow my cousins 7 ft wide land pride hog. I just purchased a L3901. Is this too much hog for my tractor to pull. If I used it I will be mowing on mostly flat ground. Thanks for any guidance.

It will be max for an L3901 but not too much on level ground, if it will fit.

Check to see if the LP 'Hog is Cat 1 or Cat 2. You cannot mount Cat 2 implement on the Cat 1 Three Point Hitch of a L3901.

(If you get the LP 'Hog model number from your cousin you can research hitch on LP's web site.)

If you go slow, you shouldn't have any problems. You want to make sure not to bog the engine down, so your speed is what makes the biggest difference. You have enough power to run the mower, just not enough to power through really thick stuff. It will also help if you keep the mower up fairly high while cutting. The lower you cut, the thicker it is and the more power it takes.

I run a 6 foot cutter with 30 hp at the pto. You have more power then I do, so the bigger mower should be right at the max of what you can handle. Ideally a 6 foot mower would be better if you where buying, but for free borrowing, you'll be fine.

If your L3901 is a HST you are right at 30 HP at the PTO. That Land Pride 7' cutter will spec out at 45 to 90 HP recommended. You will need to ballast the front of the tractor unless you have a FEL. If you have a FEL you can leave it on and will be able to keep the front end on the ground. If you are on flat ground and are cutting light grass and weeds you can run the cutter but you will probably need to run at a pretty slow speed. Watch your temps and don't run hot.

Jeff.... while I haven't found the model of the hog just yet.... I do know my cousin's MF1643 is a CAT 1 hitch. So I think its safe to say the mower is made for Cat 1. Of course I'll double and triple check that!

Turbys.... wow! 45-90 HP! My cousin must have got some bad advice when he bought that mower.... he bought new with his tractor which is just 43 HP gross!

The power to run is not gonna be the issue. You can go infinitely slow with the HST. And can always talk less than a 7' swath.

The issue is gonna be the size and heft of the 7' cutter. It sticks way back there, and is heavy. Do you know just what 7' cutter it is?

Looks like LP has several offerings.

A 2084 is a little over 1000#
A 2684 is 1400-1500# depending on dual or single wheel
A 3684 is 2000#.

And they also have a 1884 offset twin spindle mower under 1000#.

I think you are gonna struggle with a 1500 or 2000# version. And any of them are certainly gonna require the FEL to stay on to keep the front end down. My 3400 was the same basic frame. And with a 6' cutter @ a bit over 1000#, you could use one hand and lift the front of the tractor by the grill guard. And a 7' cutter moves the weight even further back

That number I pulled was from the Land Pride web site for their lightest 7 foot cutter. I don't know what cutter model specifically you are talking about though. Keep in mind that those are manufacturers recommended HP ranges for what they deem satisfactory performance. My Brown 472 cutter has a 120 HP gearbox, weighs 1060#, and I believe is rated for a minimum 40 PTO HP. The 7' Brown is rated for a minimum of 50 PTO HP but weighs more at 1375#. If your cousin was told he could run that cutter I hope that the sales person truthfully presented the facts to him.

It also has a huge amount of inertia. Be very careful engaging the pto and make your throttle changes slowly. I already slip the clutch at idle to get my 60 going.

If you can lift it, you can spin it. You may have to go really slow to not bog it down, & go easy on the clutch to engage it, but it will spin & mow if it can lift it.

to me that's the catch. you might be able to power it through going slow in the flat, but that's a heavy piece of equipment for your size/wt. tractor. slopes would be suspect on safety. is this a one occasion usage? your owners manual will tell you the max specs for implements on your tractor in terms of wt & pto hp.... good luck

I confirmed this evening that its a RCR1872. That means its a 6ft cut not a 7ft as I originally thought. So as long as I go slow... I should be good. According to LP website recommended HP is 20-65...

RCR1872 = 737 pounds.

No strain for an L3901.

Do you know how to adjust an R/C for cutting? Adjustment is not intuitive.

Get the RCR1872 Operator's Manual if you can, or download from LP's web site.

Yep, that cutter is gonna be no problems at all. almost 15k blade tip speed and high lift blades....it will cut pasture/grasses real well. You might not have to go as slow as you think. But thats the beauty of HST. You can vary your speed as the conditions of the field change.

Its easiest to set it up on a concrete floor first. Make sure you get things level side to side. Then figure the cutting height you want. 4" is about where I set the front of the cutter at, measure from floor to a blade.

Then you want the rear set about 2" higher. Dont ahve to be exact in that, you are at the mercy of the tailwheel adjustment.

My RCR1860 is no problem for my L3200 at all, except needing to slow down in heavy stuff. I'd expect a 6' would be just fine. You'll have to slow down more often, balancing out the gains from a wider mower, but it will lift & spin fine.

that's a lightweight cutter, weighs much less than any robust 7' hog. that changes things, yeah, should be just fine w/your tractor. as always, watch the slopes.

LD1 is right. I think the 7ft hog is too much for your L3901 to handle comfortably. You can run it power-wise but it is just a mismatch in my opinion. I operated a 6ft JD hog for about 10 years using a 48 gross hp tractor and that was just right. I now run a 7ft BushHog brand hog that weighs around 1400lbs using an 81 gross hp tractor. I sure would not want to run my 7ft hog with a 35-37hp tractor weighing only 2800lbs or so. A 6ft hog is about right for what you describe as the utilization and for the weight and power of the L3901.

What are you cutting? Hogging saplings and heavy brush are a lot different than trimming pastures after the livestock move off.

WAY to much! Way, way, way to much. You need a 5' cutter.

Initially, your tractor will not lift it.

Secondarily, you need twice or three times the power of your 3901 to do anything other than play mowing with a 7' rotary cutter.

I've been using rotary cutters of various size with various tractors for nearly 50 years. Currently, (among others) I use a Woods BB840X (7') HD cutter with a Kubota M9960HDC12. The 9960 is rated 89 PTO HP, yet, I cannot not pull it as fast (about 5/5.5 MPH) as the mower will cleanly cut that which I was cutting in low range, sixth gear.

FWIW: Grass cuts MUCH harder than does weeds, regardless of weed height.
