JD 5403, is the hydraulic fluid level supposed to be checked(cold) before starting the tractor or after it's running and warmed up. The operator manual is not clear on that to me. Thanks

Your dipstick should have a cold and a hot level. Low level for cold and as your tractor heats up the fluid will expand to the higher level.

Not on a JD it doesn't. It should have a sight glass right beside the PTO shaft. Make sure the tractor is level front to back and side to side.

I knew that some Deere's had sight glasses but did not think the 5403 was one of those models.

No HOT or COLD on the dipstick...just FULL. Don't think there is a sight glass but will check tomorrow.

If you have a dipstick you should have a low and high mark. Low is for cold and high is for hot. Does it not have a knurled area that gives you a range?

My 5303 has the high/low marks on the dip stick, i always check cold.

Also another thing, have any attachment hydraulic cylinder retracted.
