How to rid Coyote's

KIDR - definitely agree with your post. When we first came here they did lure, kill & eat my young Lab. Young coyote in heat came into the yard - my lab went stone deaf - over the hill they both went where the rest of the pack was waiting - the end.

I enjoy watching the various techniques they use for hunting and listening to them at night. Its all a part of being way out here in the country.

I have no coyote experience and they are rare very locally, but I understand they are more prevalent down the road a piece from our new home.

I am fencing the cleared portion of my back yard to help protect the garden from the deer and the wife's cats from feral cats, fox, dogs and potential coyote. I am armed and experienced and also have a fine cross bow I purchased for this purpose that is spot on. I understand coyote are very wily and would expect that to make a dent in their population would a challenge, especially for an inexperienced hunter/marksman. But since the entrance and exit to your place is limited, it sounds like an experienced marksman could be helpful to get the point across to the critters to stay away. But this would be time consuming and more conducive for the land owner to accomplish.

One way or the other I certainly think it prudent to arm oneself and train for future endeavors, although it may not be of immediate help for you. You may want to consider photo eye lights, sprinklers, sound, etc. for those close to the house as a first step towards deterrence.

Dude, If you can kill a coyote with a crossbow I would throw my pigs off the roof to see if they could fly.

Want to keep the coyotes at bay; bring in a wolf pack!

Or a mini donkey, they run a wide path around our little fella. We had a female years ago show up, she didn't know the male dogs were neutered & would always position herself around a horse so i couldn't or wouldn't take a shot, i was tempted.
My best was 2 with one shot & like the other's have said, they'll control themselves as far as population goes, i don't think we can be rid of them without drastic measures.

Just so that you k now it is possible my buddy makes a living on coyotes in the winter. Most winters he snares between 500 - 700. At about $100/skin depending on the year it's not a bad living. One winter he hit a high 900 but didn't make the 1000. He doesn't shoot them he just snares then and is quite good at it.

Just Google "marty senneker video" and there are lots of web sites with him mentioned.

Just an edit to correct my statement of close to 1000 coyotes. Should read over 950 coyotes in one winter to be accurate.

It really is a blood curdling sound they make when they are doing whatever they are doing...

They are pack hunters, when one nails a rabbit or other small game they all start making that yipping and howling sound and go into a little feeding frenzy. When their natural prey is depleted, that is when they start to target domestic animals and unfortunately they can be very bold about it. As with all wild animals the adults can become prey to bigger animals as well as starvation, accidental injury, automobile impact, weather and potentially disease. That means their greatest predator enemies are Wolves and Humans, although just as with any wild animal they are easy prey to predatory birds and other carnivores before they grow to maturity. Fox make a similar yipping sound but are slightly more solitary and tend to hunt solo or in smaller family units. Fox will also announce to others when they have made a successful kill, kinda like when you call your kids to dinner.

Silent Spring, here we come.

I am curious, why in the world would you doubt that someone could kill a coyote with a crossbow? Crossbows are powerful, accurate weapons.

Of course they are deadly, but a bow can't kill something that is too far away to actually be a true threat.

& a Snare will kill absolutely anything that sticks its neck into it. That solution suks.

Oh me, coyotes. Them rascals are about everywhere nowadays. I've researched about them a whole lot, and one thing I learned is that what you think is a whole pack of 'yotes is only 2-3. Yes, they can make it sound like there's 20-30, but, no, it's only maybe 3 at the most 4 in a family group howling and squeaking away. They are sly rascals. Check out old Varmint Al's site. He's out west somewhere, and the boy knows his coyote stuff.

There is no doubt - a crossbow can kill a coyote. The major problem is being close enough to be effective. The coyotes, here, are right in my yard at night. During the day it's very seldom they are closer than 100 yds. I have a 22-250 sighted in at 300 yds and and a Redfield 6x18 scope - its difficult to get a good shot even with that.

Remember - a coyote is just a hotdog dressed in a heavy, fuzzy wool coat. I've made many shots that simply zing right thru the hair. And once you shoot - the coyotes will not "show" for several days.
