I am thinking about getting a post hole digger for my 1720D but was wondering if the tractor is large enough to handle one?

yep sure is. They do not take much power to operate one. After all think of those little two stoke augers you see folks use. those are basically weedeater engines. Granted the auger is not as big but you have way more torque and power than those have.

I have used one on my ym2000 and it would go all day long at barely above idle. The only thing is they don't like hard ground but a 50hp tractor would have the same problem there.

Been using one for the last few years on my 1720d. 6" auger for fence posts and a 12" for tree planting.
Works fine.

That makes sense. Thanks.

I drilled about 200 holes w/my 1610d...russ

I punched quite few holes with a 9" and 12" auger behind my YM1700. The trick is nice and slow. And raise the auger quite often to clear the dirt off.

I have a 6,9 and 12" auger and my 1500 drives them easily even in hard ground. Sometimes I even have to get off and jump on the hitch to help it dig....

Hey, There are a few of us here in Nashville with Yanmars. We tend to share a International Group Cat-1 auger with a 9-in hole cut. YM2610, YM1720D and a YM1700D.

I must say, I would prefer the 6-in hold cut for wooden fence posts. Less sloppy in the hole. ALSO, if you snag a tree root or hit rock gravel (often in TN), I strongly advise having front weights to counter balance the sudden jerk. Without them, an auger will catch a root, spin suddenly into a death spiral and nearly flip the tractor pointing straight up.

If you ever get the auger stuck in a hole, disconnect the PTO drive shaft and slowly back the PTO shaft in reverse manually. If it's rock hard stuck, doesn't budge, using a standard green T-post in the PTO U-joint closest to the head will work too. Just make sure the sheer-pin is just that a real sheer-pin, not some harden bolt. This way, no harm to the PTO U-joint sticking the T-post into it to leverage with. Lastly a shovel and hours is the other way.
