Is it time for a gasoline engine tractor?

I like a motor with a lot of oomph.
Not sure which scale applies...;)

IH and other tractor manufacturers made a big deal of torque amplification, TA, thirty years or more ago.
How did that tech work, and is it now standard?
If one has a variable turbo, one could just dial up the amount of boost needed.
The question is what's the top limit set at.
I'm pretty sure there is a reverse relationship between amount of boost and longevity of the engine.

if the hand throttle was actually maxing out the carb butterfly, with nothing to add, and she wasn't loosing rpms steadily, but instead, maintaining, and dipping in thick and recovering.. then I'd call that 100%

Well, I don't recall a carb on that diesel but I get your point.
She'd pull down, wrestle through, and recover.

what causes the increased black smoke at that very moment? Lot of fuel going in, just more exhaust pollutants?
Or is something else going on

Black smoke is unburnt fuel going out the exhaust.
If you're black stackin then you're dumping more fuel into the cylinder than the motor can burn. Good for starting but you don't gain anything pulling. But you are making max power for the setup.
To get rid of the black smoke you must increase the amount of air in the cylinder either with larger Pistons or a turbo.

The excess of fuel is used for cooling. It takes significant amount of heat to turn it ti super-heated gas.
