Bird I hear you. I believe it was around 1979 when I was getting my license renewed. I was 20 and my dad was getting his license renewed. We have the same birthday. The examiner told him that he could get the class A for an additional fee. We both did it I think the new regulations came into effect perhaps 4 years later or so.

Are there any class A required trucks that don't have air brakes? And does anyone know why air brakes are such a concern for licensing?

Yes, the new one ton dual rear wheel pick up trucks now have gcvwr of 30,000+ lbs. no air brakes on them. Then you have the 450/4500 and 550/5500 class trucks. Weights have skyrocketed over the past 20 years for pickups. Heck. Half tons can tow over 10,000 lbs and some have a payload approaching 4,000 lbs.

Just as an update. I went and got the trailer yesterday. We have not had any rain in some time and wouldn't you know it severe thunderstorms were the norm. Finally got the trailer hooked up and made the 42 mile trip home uneventful. Took a while for the tires to warm a little. No issues running a safe 60 MPH. Got to get used to the triple set up. Owner knocked off another $100 due to one light not working properly with turn signals and brake lights working intermittently. I had my wife follow me home in the car for safety issues. Thanks to everyone for their input and suggestions. Several wrecks on I-40 and 321 coming home. Had to slow down to a crawl much of the way.

Is that an old trailer house frame and axles? If it is, that would be a red flag for me. There is no title, so it is probably home made but why didn't the guy get a salvage title for it? If I could buy it really cheap and use it off road, on the farm I would. Other wise I would walk away.

we don't need trailer titles in SC. You don't register a trailer and not having a title here is very common.

Agreed. But all factory built trailers still come with a Certificate of Origin that is signed over to the owner/new owner like a title is and shows proof of ownership. I know this goes back at least 20 years, which is my oldest trailer.

I know lots of guys who have bought trailers from South Carolina and they have always had to register them as home made unless they were factory. Not really a big deal. I'm going to get some new tires and will have to upgrade my license to either a class A CDL or just class A for the weight of the trailer in addition to getting it titled. My mechanic went through the trailer and had to replace a few bulbs, adjust the brakes, and repair several wires. He said that the bearings were in great shape and looked like they had been repacked recently with no issues. One brake spring was broken but it was an easy fix. The trailer has brakes on all three axles. The deck is weathered some but I'll treat it with used motor oil. I actually have a shed bay available for it since we just sold our baler and backhoe. He did confirm that those were UTG 6K pound trailer axles with serviceable brakes. All in all I am tickled with the buy and think that I did OK.
