By the time you bought all the steel you need plus your time and electric (for welding) to build you could buy those ready made and free shipping.

I would rate the set I bought (the 42" from ebay above) as one of the best buys I have made.

Here is their Website: Attachments for John Deere - Tractor Attachments

You will have to verify that they will fit your loader.

If you have a SSQA on your Deere, it is chaper to purchase a set. However the 790 I had was equipped with the JD QA so I made a frame to hold a pair of forks I had scrounged. They were off of a 4000# Clark truck and way more than needed. There are threads somewhere on the site that have photos of mine.

I also prefer the Pin Top forks.

These are 2"x2"x48" Block forks that I found on eBay, already had the frame:

I thought about building a set of forks for my 3 point hitch, but decided it was too much work. I stopped by a local forklift repair shop that I sold an old forklift to and asked if he had any old masts. I bought two of them in different sizes. Sure made it a lot easier to build, by just having to add the 3 point pins and a top link attaching point. I also have a lot better forks than I could have built out of my own stuff.
I was priced $50 and $75 for the two masts, but made an offer of $90 for them both, and they took it. Definitely a lot more than they would have gotten out of them in scrap value.
