1 - It started on "southern soil" 2 - How many events would you like in our governments history where they forced an armed conflict? On a sidenote, for some reason the North seems proud that the war was started over the abolition of slavery. The issue wasn't slavery, but federal rights vs state rights. I also find it amusing that since Lincoln was killed, he is portrayed as some kind of liberator, when in reality, he was another mans terrorist. Lincoln also wanted to send all the slaves out of the US. For some reason the north has this thing about the civil war being a nobel cause about slavery. The fact is, even back then you had good people and bad people. There were just as many bigots in the north as there were in the south even during the mid 1800's. Heck, when did women get the right to vote? I had to remind my boys after they watched the film "42" (about Jackie Robinson) that the north was just as prejudiced as the south when it came to the color of a mans skin, even close to a hundred years after the civil war.
1) Sure it started when the first shot was fired FROM Charlestown AT Fort Sumner.
2) Go read the resolutions from each of the succeeding state's legislatures justifying leaving the Union and tell me this wasn't primarily about slavery. There were many contentious trade issues between north and south but those were gradually being worked out. The northern states agreed to many southern demand on trade and IIFC the final draft passed by congress was written by the south. Find me a US history text from a respected southern university that says slavery was a secondary cause.
3) No one ever claimed the north was perfect on race relations. If I were a middle class black man I'd much rather live in Atlanta than any northern city today. On the other hand, the abolitionist movement started in Boston.

Small but significant correction. The northeast pushed for abolition of slavery. It was the south that decided to start the civil war.

Please.....stop with the facts......this is purely an emotional discussion.

IT, what do you think about the fact that rifles have been used on only two out of 779 homicides in your state in the past five years.

It's one of thousands of facts that led up to the first shots being fired.

I don't find this topic emotional at all. My grandparents came off a boat in the early 1900's and worked in coal mines. I personally feel no ties to the south OR north per America's civil war history.

My only emotional point in this whole topic is that there are numerous north east states who are *ucking over people who own guns in their states.

Fair enough.......I am just glad Lee surrendered and the North won.

Speaking of gun control.......

GOT MY CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT YESTERDAY *

Yesterday afternoon I went to our local gun shop to get a small handgun for personal protection.

When I was ready to pay for the pistol and ammo, the cashier said, "Strip down, facing me."

Making a mental note to complain to the NRA about the gun control wackos running amok, I did as she instructed.

After the hysterical shrieking stopped, I learned that she was telling me
how to place my credit card in the card reader.

I've been asked to shop elsewhere in the future.
They need to make their instructions to seniors a little more clear.

I still don't think I looked that bad.

Gun control works and punks don't go to clubs with rifles.

I honestly believe that the founding fathers of this great nation were leary of a strong central government. They had their fill of England and wanted checks and balances to control power and the nature of man.

Men being men, over time, I also believe we are now past the point of men abusing that power. Lincoln solidified it with the civil war won by the north IMO.
