USED OILS

I store mine in a 275 gallon tote. When it gets full about once a year I call the local oil recycling place and they come pump it out for free.

Here in Central Texas we were getting paid between $0.25 and $0.35 for our oil for the longest. Crude prices dropped and that dwindled to free pick-up. Now crude prices are so low we are paying to have it picked up. Not much but it it still bites at ~3,000 gallons a month. On a personal note I much prefer the lower crude prices to having the company I work for get paid for their waste oil

I'm glad I live in the country.you need a burn permit here the permit is free I still don't getting one but just in case the fire gets away from ya they know who to bill!!!!. To may ruels

I take mine to a local muffler/welding shop, they use it in a waste oil heater.

Here in Catawba County you can deposit used motor oil at their service centers for no charge. Parts houses offer the same service. As far as used tires are concerned I think they charge $80 per ton at the landfill. Not sure about batteries.

The local landfill charges $40 a ton. They charge $5 per tire.

Now I think there is a bit too much excitement going on about dumping oil on the ground. If you dump it into a stream of water yes it's going to contaminate it. If oil gets dumped onto the ground there are soil microbes that enjoy eating the oil. If they didn't there would be no grass growing in the ditches along highways. Pavement might be some sort of special oil but it still pollutes the immediate environment with oil.

Now don't take me wrong here. I'm not advocating dumping oil into the environment. There are better uses for used oil than just dumping it onto the ground.

Just wondering here and I have not read brush killer label in a few years but some of the brush killers use to tell you for best results use fuel oil rather than water. Well for a lot of brush fuel oil by itself is a very good brush killer with no other chemical used. So if fuel oil can be used is it safe and used oil would not be? Also is not some of the fertilizer products made from crude oil? Is the use of it safe? I am not saying in any manner to dump oil down a well, that is a well known NO NO as it may very well hit a water level there. Would say the same for spraying ditches with fuel oil but now where does most brush grow, here it is the ditches.
As to the stores that have been mentioned accepting used oil think it is a federal law they must, not state but federal.

I do keep a 5 gallon bucket I use for tools like shovels and hoes and with spray disk blades and such to prevent them rusting. But just dumping on the ground do not support that.

Then there is an ex-coworker who's dad flew a plan years ago checking for leaks on oil pipe lines. I said what did he look for dead foliage and he said no, he looked for extra green foliage. When he went on to explain he said crude oil was good for a plant but process oils (at least like gas) would kill them.

Many years ago at a former job we put our used oil in five gallon buckets. We had about ten of them. When they all got full I took them to the auto parts store where we had an account and bought all our parts and recycled it there. I did this for many years. The company hired a guy to look over the shop and I told him to take the oil to be recycled at the Napa store. I left and went to a job site. When I came back the oil was gone and I figured he did as told. Come to find out he didn't want to load it up and spill any on the truck so he dug a hole next to the shop and dumped all fifty gallons in it. I left the company a couple months later and don't know what they did about it but what a dumb thing to do.

For all you environmental police out there consider this, There's about 4 Million miles of asphalt roadway in the US. What do you think that's made of? It's laying on the ground, subject to rain and water runoff. Where do you think that water goes? Yep, in the ground.

You're confusing different forms of oil and oil products. The tar & asphalt are solid. At ordinary temperatures it will stay in place. Motor oil is a liquid. It will migrate beyond where it is poured. Yes, soil bacteria can and does break down oil. That's what happens to all the vehicle leaks. But concentrated amounts make for an expensive haz waste clean up job. The larger amount, the more expensive the clean-up.

I'm not having a hissy fit. Go ahead and pour your waste oil behind your garage. When you try to sell the property and it's discovered, open your wallet. Even after it's sold, if the new owner can find you, you'll see how expensive clean up is.

No permit needed here for burning trash. The VFD asks that you notify the sheriff's department though if you're burning brush piles in case someone calls to report a fire. That's so they don't send the fire trucks out. We also have dry spells and the county will sometimes issue a burn ban. That means NO open fires. You can still burn trash in a barrel. (Our usual method to dispose of paper waste.)

It's getting late. Gotta run but to salute the "environ-mental" police here, I think I'll go out and burn a tire. :stirthepot:
