USED OILS

No permit needed here for burning trash. The VFD asks that you notify the sheriff's department though if you're burning brush piles in case someone calls to report a fire. That's so they don't send the fire trucks out. We also have dry spells and the county will sometimes issue a burn ban. That means NO open fires. You can still burn trash in a barrel. (Our usual method to dispose of paper waste.)

It's getting late. Gotta run but to salute the "environ-mental" police here, I think I'll go out and burn a tire. :stirthepot:
If you do it right about oil base products about not burning a landfill is not cheap either to dump tires. I cleared a field for a food plot found 8 tires!!!!!! In the tall weeds. The DR is worried about the air here but what about air force and they worry about a tire burned at night!!!!.

My old house, I had an oil drip set up for the shop wood burner. But now dont have that, so.....

Been working on filling the lawn roller with used oil. Dont have to worry about it freezing, dont have to worry about the roller rusting out.

The roller holds 260 gallons total. Got about 200 in it now, so still room to dump another ~years worth. After that, there are plenty of people in the area that will come and take it to burn in their shops.

I take mine to the county recycle center. When I lived in the city I took to autozone

I used to take all the oil in when I lived in a apartment now I just keep it all.

That's a great idea, just wondering what about filling the tractor tires with used oil instead of saline.

I thought that was a good idea as well. My concern would be the mess if it somehow leaked.

Yeah, a tractor tire that could be opened up like a fish if you run over something sharp like a half buried plow share probably wouldn't be the best repository for oil. Like blood, it doesn't take much oil to make a pretty nasty mess.
We can put out well capped jugs of oil with our mixed recycling every other week. The parts stores will take it, but give you a clipboard with a two sided form to fill out, so a milk jug set out by the garbage cart is much easier.

I could be wrong but I do t think oils and rubber get along over time

An ad on Craigslist will get rid of all of your used oil, as long as it's not contaminated with water, or antifreeze. When heating my other shop, I burned on average of 350-400 gallons a year. I kept the shop @ 50º, then bumped it up to what was comfortable, for whatever I was doing. Mine will burn anything from brake fluid, to 50 wt.

It's just a shame it won't burn jet fuel. I have a source that when they inspect their crafts fuel tanks, they have to be purged, and fuel disposed of. I'd never have to worry about a fuel supply if it did...

If you have a corner to set a barrel, and dump your used oil in, when it's full, post the ad. Guys like me that burn it will either provide another good barrel, or bring it back if you're close enough.

There must be something wrong with the "recycling business" in my area. Local law enforcement is looking for the folks who have dumped dozens of 55 gallon barrels of used oil at three different locations in our county. There was an article regarding this situation in the local newspaper yesterday. With that much oil - they must be checking those businesses that do oil changes. Hard to believe folks could do this - what a mess.
