A little of everything
We have two of our water troughs that were leaking around the seams. Mainly due to normal use, although one is really not that old. I brought them to the shop and we sprayed them with 2 1/2 inches of close cell foam.

Problem solved so far.

I saw someone on a western drive wooden pegs in holes in a wooden water tank. I think it was after a shoot out. :D

JB Weld would have worked fine here also. We were mainly wanting to see what the foam would do.

LOL ..... I don't think there were any bullet holes in them.

Only issue I see is putting the "fix" on the outside...there is a good possibility that the foam will absorb the water...even though it is supposed to be closed cell...once the foam gets saturated the trough will be heavy...

I bought am 8 ft tank the other day and it had a rubber material on the seams. After looking at it he closest thing I can think of that I have used would be concrete expansion joint sealer or a urethane sealer like is used on windshields. I"m curious to see how that form works for this application. Would be interesting to see how much less heat would be required to keep from icing up.

This sounds like a perfect commercial for "flex seal" lol.

No sir, the close cell will not absorb the water. We were wondering if it would keep a good enough seal between the tank and foam to keep the water seeping out. So far they are both dry.

We were just experimenting to see how well it would work.

That's what I was thinking also. Water getting between the tank and the foam.
Also agree with RoadHunter about flex seal. May be worth a try to spray the tanks inside seams with it.

I woudl think that in a submerged application (exposed to water 100% of time) the foam around the repair would absorb at least some water. If not that is some impressive stuff.
