We have used the punch (or some other round object, like a Phillips screw driver) in the hole and a flat screw driver many, many times. It works quite well when you get the hang of it AND it fits all keyed brands of drills, metric or sae

Ken - you are correct, but you have to see my shed to appreciate the difficulty

BCP you are right about B16 being the taper, but not all 13 mm keys will fit - I have several and even those with 6 mm pins and the right number of teeth (12) are a little undersized. I also have other chucks with keys, but none will fit into/onto the drill spindle.

My next option is to send the chuck to a tool supplier. Several have tried to be help but none have the answer. The last resort is to replace the chuck if I can find one to fit

I was suggesting a new chuck (B16 taper) with key, to fit the press spindle.

Bruce.

The chuck key got caught in some swarf, got flung across the shed and has simply disappeared - defying all efforts to find it.

The chuck is marked "Czechoslovakia - MAS B16 Part number 241820 It has a 13 mm capacity and a 6 mm pin

No Jacobs key will fit and I'm not sure a Rhom S2 will either (though I have ordered the latter). Got an email back from Germany where MAS was listed on the website but they reckon their's will not fit

Anyone know what might be an equivalent please? It is an old but excellent machine and I do not want to have to find a new chuck for it

Thanks in advance

Alan

I would keep looking for the chuck key. It will be in the last place you look. :) Then when you find it, the paint idea sounds like a good one.

My experience has been that as soon as you buy a replacement part the old one will magically show up!

Exactly. I looked and looked for for an oil filter in my shop that I knew I had. I finally gave up and went to the store and bought a new one. As I walked back in the door I noticed the original one right where it should have been, and where I "looked" a hundred times.

If you really want to find the chuck key, have someone else look for it while you go get an iced tea and relax. The chuck key is in your shop, Just have someone find it.

I stuck an old magnet to the frame of my drill press over 20 years ago and that's where the chuck key goes immediately. Either in my hand or on that magnet. Has worked for 20 years. I hope 20 more.

I use a magnet too...it's an easy holder for the chuck key and whatever bits I'm using at the time...I can set something down on a bench top and by the time I turn around the gremlins have moved it...!

Age has taught me to stop trying to catch things I drop and just try to watch were they go...else half the time I end up swatting whatever across the shop etc...!

This happened to me last week, but i knew the general direction it flew in, but man.....took a while to find it because i have to much junk laying on the floor. Ended up moving stuff and found it eventually. It is now painted yellow. Thinking on attaching a chain or wire to it....
Keep looking. You know it's there!

Most have a string or chain on them anyway. I do because I must spend at least half my shop time searching for crap I put down somewhere and forgot where and now it's getting worse not better.
