The hose idea might work.

Where do you find premium diesel? The only gas stations by me (Mirabito) have one diesel pump with one grade of diesel. It's next to the kerosene pump.

Admittedly, I am new to all this. The tractor is my first diesel engine ever so I never really thought about it before. Just don't recall seeing a location with more than one diesel pump/grade.

Using the glow plug for 4-5 seconds more... how long (total) would that be? I'm not totally sure what would be considered a "normal" time. Sometimes I think I leave it too long before cranking. :)

I have a feeling that premium diesel is just a sales gimmick. It's regular diesel with an additive package. It boosts cetane rating, has some lubricants, injector cleaning, fuel stabilizer, etc. I have yet to see any information that leads me to believe "premium" diesel isn't what you get when you buy regular diesel and use your own additive, like Power Systems Diesel Kleen....or any number of additives out there on the market.

My understanding is that the puff of black smoke on start up is a result of an incomplete burn at the engine starts up. Its normal and will not go away. I can't comment on the effect on livestock. If you don't like the puff of smoke, they probably won't either, but will it harm them...probably not. But I think your solution is better ventilation...

The initial puff doesn't bother me much, but If I want to warm up the tractor inside, I like to open both the front and back doors to my shed or garage to let the air flow through better.

What are you doing when you finish using it, park and turn off? What process exactly? I have a GC1720 and I get a small initial puff, but it dissipates immediately. If you're getting a big belch, there is something that you are doing or something with the engine.

Never thought shut down might affect things. My process is to move throttle to idle, check that all the levers are disengaged/in neutral, lower the FEL to sit on the ground, lower the 3ph and then turn the key to "off." Am I missing something?

A big reason my "cloud" doesn't dissapate quickly is ventilation. I am currently in a garage with the door on the opposite side of the wind. There is not much air movement. When I move to the barn, there will be much better cross ventilation. IF it was just me, not that big a deal. Even with ventilation, I'm still concerned about that cloud with the horses in the same structure.

Premium diesel just like regular diesel is the same ultra low sulphur content . . But premium diesel is not just diesel with "power service" added to it. In my area I get it from the Coop and they sell it at their station as well as deliver it to contractors and other large users.

Contractors use it for their equipment and fleets because they have seen improvements in their mileage, maintence needs, and its cleaner burning tendencies. Its typically a nickel to a dime higher in price. I also use a little power service adfutive in mine for temperature or moisture issues.

I don't know that gas stations would carry it but coops and fuel suppliers will in their station stores.

I noticed a difference in smoke issues soon after starting to use it.

Think of it this way . . the more your fuel gets burned . . and not exhausted . . the less smoke you have . . so anything that keeps moisture from building up in the fuel or anuthing that is better consuned . . is an advantage. That is especially true with engines at higher compression ratios.

My pickup truck has a 6 liter gas performance engine in it. I use either premium non-ethanol or regular non-ethanol in it and it runs far better than regular or plus with ethanol.

High compression engines want a fuel that burns "slower" . . so the fuel fires across the entire compressed quantity. A gas engine at a 10 to 1 compression ratio or higher benefits that way . . and of course diesel-powered engines are also high compression. You get better mileage and cleaner burning when a higher compression engine completely fires the fuel. In gas a higher octane is not a faster burn . . Its a slower more powerful burn under compression . . netting the driver more power per gallon.

And the glow plug being on helps reduce cranking because the heat fires the diesel sooner so less is injected/expelled unburned.

I agree.

Diesel is a commodity, it's all made to the same grade. It's the additive package at the station that makes it different. Premium is just a marketing sales pitch. They add some some to their tank and charge extra.

There is no such thing as premium diesel.

Try running the glow plug for 5-10 seconds before ignition and report back.

The newer diesel engines put out very little smoke so the puff you get on startup looks a lot worse in comparison to what it puts out once it starts. My next door neighbour picked up a mid 70's IH a few months ago, that things puts out some smoke! Filled a good sized (80x100?), very drafty (no lights needed with doors closed)barn!

You could always trade it in on something with a new tier 4 engine, with a DPF, DEF, no more smoke then. :)
