I don't know how old ours is but the cordless mouse has to travel 3 times the distance that it used to, just to move the cursor the same distance. I think the batteries are good and I moved the sending unit a little more inline. The mouse is about 3 years old, same as the computer.

Mice wear out...a couple things...
Mice do not require a pad try some other smooth surfaces...
There are some settings in the control panel to check

Also if the mouse came with a software disk it may have additional drivers that can offer more setting control...most mice will work fine without having to install any additional device drivers

good luck...

I'm assuming that it's an optical mouse, check and see if there is a bit of lint or desk fuzz up in the tunnel that might be interfering with the beam. Whenever mine acts up that is the cause.

Yeah, if it's an optical mouse then cleaning the optics with a Q-tip will help a lot. Just did one of mine yesterday and now it works much better.
It doesn't hurt to clean the surface of the mouse pad periodically either. Dust gets into the pad which will cause the mouse to act strangely also.

Excellent!
My first line of defense is usually... ignore it, it'll go away.

So I took your advice and blew into the hole. It worked, so if some is good, more is better, right? I gave it a good shot with the air compressor and it is working like new.

Now my bride is telling me i should have sucked it out because blowing just spreads it around. I'm not sure if i won this round or not.

Note to self:
Don't mention mouse balls. That would be wrong.:stirthepot:

I have an optical mouse - Logitech. I've cleaned mine by blowing & Q-tip. If yours is anything like mine - blowing will not spread dust, etc inside the unit. BTW - I've learned to hate mouse pads - I'm always running the mouse off the edge of the pad. I just run my mouse on the desk top.
