Scorpion mobility

Back to scorpions, I found one in the first couple of months after moving here. It was climbing on the bedroom wall. It was almost transparent, and about the size of a half dollar. A flip flop made short work of it. Didn't see another until the next year, but on the master bathroom wall. The thought of finding one in my bed was enough to get me looking for how they were getting in, and I noticed a lot of cracking in the caulk around the doors and windows. I painted the exterior of the house that year, and went around prior to that caulking everything in site. Haven't seen any more since, and that was a couple years ago. Now I better go knock on some wood...

It's not just the fauna that sting and bite, it's the flora too. Practically everything that grows down here has thorns or produces seeds with thorns. Within hours of arriving in South Texas you learn that a "goat head" has nothing to do with an animal. And we have feral hogs that reach 1200 pounds that will consume your entire garden in less than 15 minutes and Javelinas that will rip your legs off and eat you. If the Cougar don't get you first. Yeah, it's all bad.

That should convince you softies to stay out of Texas. We don't want you down here anyway.

You forgot the Prickly Pear Cactus, Stinging Nettles, Ground Hornets, Thorny Locust, Mesquite, Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, Poison Sumac, the dreaded Catalpa worm, Boll Weevil, Fire Ants, Ant Lions, Alligator Gars, plain old alligators, Snapping Turtles and Horned Toads. We have most all of these too, and even some quicksand down along the Cimarron, North Canadian and I think the Red River also. I about forgot Liberal Yankees, but they mostly live over in the upscale gated community across the road and don't cause any trouble, except maybe the heavy traffic of illegal immigrants driving trucks with trailers loaded with lawn care equipment. You REALLY have to watch out for them!

Dang scorpions. When we moved here we did not have any for three or four years. One of our neighbors has lived here most of his life. He says they were here when he was growing up, that would be 60 years ago... Well they are back. We have found them all kind of places you would not think they could get. The worst time for me, I was sitting in the family room which has a 2 story ceiling with a railing above. One fell down the back of my shirt. By the time I come outa that shirt he got me 4 or 5 times. Hate them buggers.

Especially if you have a fireplace!

Good point. Fireplaces are HORRENDOUS energy hogs when they are not being used. They allow 24/7 air to enter and escape the home and the flue allows all types of critters to enter. I've seen rodents get in so a scorpion would be no problem.

I have more problems with scorpions coming in with the firewood. I have learned to not bring firewood in the house unless it is really cold outside. I don't store it in the house or on the enclosed porch anymore. I have everything else sealed off nicely.

I 've eaten prickly pear cactus . There 're pretty good .

And you can make Jam out of Prickly Pear apples. It taste great. Mesquite makes the best wood for BBQ. Scorpions eat other bugs. Snakes keep the rats away. "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." But I can't say anything nice about Chiggers, Goat Heads, or Cockleburs. :)
