For some reason, that brings a very large smile to my face..:) There is nothing better than watching children being educated.

James,

I almost always agree with you, and I always enjoy your posts, like I did this one.

I just have a "tweak" for it: There is nothing better than watching...ADULTS being educated (especially the here-to-fore willfully-ignorant ones).

We helped build a "camp" for some people from the Big City;1500 sq.ft two stories;appraised at $240,00.
We had a hard time explaining that they would need a septic tank and well.We did the plumbing and set it up to winterize and wrote a shut-down procedure.Left with no heat(hit -22F that winter) and everything froze and broke.

It seems like every year I hear a story how someone from Chicago goes deer hunting and checks in a cow at the local deer check station. I suspect this is an urban legend but you never know. In recent years Illinois no longer requires you to check a deer in, you can do it on line, now I guess the meat locker clues people in if they haul a cow in with a shot gun slug hole in it.

When the kids were little we bought a tent trailer to use up at the gold mining claim. Older daughter took along a little friend one weekend. We couldn't get her out of the trailer. "There's so much dirt out there!"

Yup, a whole world full of it..:)

I got a good education about both electric fences and teenage human behavior, when a "friend" of mine, when we were both about 16 were at his place and he handed me a garden hose with running water for a quick drink after a tiring and hot day. what I didn't realize was that right by the stream of water was an electric fence, as I took the hose to drink, I accidently let the stream of water play over the little unseen fencewire. Of course he knew it was there and all the other teens in the group also knew about it except me. I learned very quickly what an electric fence felt like in my hand and my mouth. Everyone had a very good laugh but me.

My wife and I both grew up in the city, but also both had relatives on farms. My Mother's family and her Mother's family were both from the country. We both spent split time; week days in the city, and weekends in the country. The small farm we live on now she inherited from her Grandmother. We have a few neighbors who moved there from various cities around the area (one is even from Brooklyn, NY) who have slowly come to understand that country living wasn't at all what they imagined it would be.
You can't just let your dog run around and kill other people's chickens and harass little old ladies at their mailbox, then be upset when Fido doesn't come home one day.
You can't call the cops every time someone shoots a gun, then be surprised when the Sheriff's deputy tells you you're pushing your luck with the constant complaints.
And it's a lot harder work than most city people seem to understand.

The electric fence thing, though ... I think that's a lesson every boy must learn on his own, regardless of where he sleep at night.

Then there is the corollary, Country kid goes to the big City.

The electric fence thing even some country boys learn about the hard way and end up dead.....at least the one I know of.....and I don't know anything about such fences with first hand experience. That's a sad story for my cousin.

Then there is the colliery, Country kid goes to the big City.

Yeah, and do you think that country kid is going to leave his keys in the truck? That is if he ain't afraid to go into "The City". Heck I'm afraid to drive thru the neighborhood that I grew up in.

Cheers,
Mike

I put an electric fence around my garden about 10 years ago. I never touched one before. And I've heard hundreds of stories about people touching them, so what the heck, they lived to tell about it, so.... I touched it. It felt like an itty-bitty static shock. I was very disappointed. So I kicked off my sandals and stood barefoot in the dirt and tried it again....
