Ford 861 powermaster, JD 301A, 2015 Mahindra 3540 HST.
I just bought a 2015 Mahindra 3540 HST at an estate auction. It has 41 hours on it and is like new or perhaps better than new because the original owner was quite a craftsman and built and installed a fantastic set of mirrors and a bucket indicator rod on the tractor. It has a strange exhaust system on it. I know the former owner died of a heart attack and the tractor/loader was purchased from a local dealership. Their salesman was gone when I visited their location and nobody could find out any information on their computer. Would someone with a 2015 3540 Mahindra please contact me by email. I would like to exchange some pictures of the exhaust systems so I can determine if this was fabricated and installed by the original owner, the dealer, or someone else. Thank you, royal@copper.net

Almost 100% certain that your exhaust riser is an addition from the previous owner. I don't own that model, but my factory exhaust is similar and dumps at the lower area where yours appears to tie into that riser.

At this link you will find some stock pictures. mahindra 354 hst - Google Search

Nice tractor!

I believe you are correct about the original owner modifying the exhaust. Now I am wondering why. I do find a couple of pics showing 3540's with a stack but very, very, few.

Some people like to be double dog sure that all exhaust gasses go up and away from the operator. The stack ensures that it gets up and over the operator in most cases.

The new Tier IVs are so clean that manufacturers can dump exhausts down low where it is the shortest run. In my experience there is a slight exhaust odor on startup, so perhaps this just was a use preference. I actually wish that the exhaust was routed a little further away or towards the front of the machine. easy fix it seems as your prior owner demonstrated.

I would advise going back to the original exhaust... iv looked into modifying a few and unlike T3 tractors the exhaust is very important to keep original. It could throw off the backpressure and make the computer go haywire... and wouldn't be covered under warranty

Well my tier 4 exhaust sure does stink. It's routed down low and toward the front but it still stinks, especially for someone down there throwing stuff into the front bucket.

I much rather have the down exhaust on any tractor. My 1540 shoots right out the lower front and leaves no room anything to grab it and break a manifold or the whole exhaust.. keeps the smoke out of your face more also while driving imo. Its a preference though I see it about 30% up-70%down from customers opinions

Speaking of how clean the Tier IV's are, I stuck my face over the exhaust port on a buddy's JD 3039R and he rapidly advanced the throttle several times. It smelled like air from a blow dryer minus the burnt hair smell...just clean hot air. There is no rolling coal with a Tier IV. I know this is not an apples to apples comparison as the JD has a DPF and the Mahindra does not.

I AM interested in the CC Diesel Performance outfit that will make a custom tune for your diesel engine including Tier IV to increase power. They claim they can chip any computer controlled diesel engine and I have no reason to doubt it.

Apologies for the hijack...back to original topic.
