Biodiesel

There is one pump (Agriland FS Inc.) that sells biodiesel not too far from my place. If I am not mistaken it is 100% bio. I buy 55 gal drum once per season and use it only in the summer. Can't tell difference in performance of the tractor.

If you check with them, it might actually be 99%. To get the blender tax credit, they have to blend in at least 1% regular diesel in the mix. That blender tax credit is pretty lucrative tax advantage.

Since you are in Central Iowa. The pump is west of Indianola on hwy 92.

Well, check with them to see if they are getting the blender credit and the fuel is actually 99% bio. I am not going to drive 60 miles one way to find out. I did check some time ago with a distributer up near Iowa Falls, and they said theirs was 99% with 1% regular diesel to get the $1 per gallon blender tax credit.

This bio-diesel is new to me and why I came in looking. I have been buying straight highway taxed, low sulfur, diesel for my tractors. Today I decided to save a buck and go up the road where I heard they had off-road diesel. As I began to fill the first can the "up to 5% bio-diesel" sticker caught my eye. Hmmmmmmm, I don't remember ever seeing that on the other pumps I use. Then I start to fill the second can and see the other sticker warning it may have over 500 ppm sulfur so I stopped at $20. My old tractors probably won't care but I'm reluctant to load them up with something I haven't tried before. My backhoe had off-road diesel in it when I got it but it was also clogged so bad I had to drain the tank and clean out all the lines to get it to stay running. Sooo I walked around and looked at their highway low sulfur diesel and it also was labeled 5%. I reckon I'll just mix this 10 gallons with my regular stuff to minimize the possible side effects.

Bio is a great fuel. If your going to run Bio or have bio filled central tank you have to ensure that it meets ASTM 6751 and make sure you don't store it for longer than 12 months.

The bad/good thing about bio is it will dissolve all the crud in your fuel system. Depending how dirty it initially was it might plug fuel filter and injectors. But once you get over that part your fuel system will be clean and also the exhaust fumes are less noxious.

Yeah its much better solvent than dino diesel. I put a tankful of bio through an older massey and all the varnish in the tank and hard lines ended up in the filter, clogging it rather nicely. Bio and old rubber fuel lines don't get along well either. It can cause them to swell and split. You will however find all the lines you should have replaced anyway. Once you get all that corrected, the older injectors tend to work nicely with bio. The piezo electrics are so small and ground so fine that any crap in the bio tends to pit or erode them due to the high pressures. Bosch put out a paper on the damage from crap bio on injectors. BL is that if you run good fresh bio, it will not cause any problems.

EPA does not require pump labeling for bio until content is 5% or more. Most of the diesel available is spiked with a little bio, typical around 2%. Therefore, it is not labeled so at the pump.
