What a small, little man you must be to shoot someone's pet because of a mistake. Glad I don't have neighbors like you.
Personally, I dont ever want to have to shoot someone's dog. My family has had dogs since before I was born, but if a dog is attacking a person or one of our animals, I dont care if its a mistake or not that they are out, I will defend them by force if necessary.
If your dog is aggressive that it will attack a person or an animal, you have a potentially dangerous dog and you should have more than one way of making sure that it doesn't get out.

A dog worrying livestock isn't a "mistake", any more than drunk drivers killing people is a "mistake".

Kinder than shooting the dog, and the animal shelter will try to find a home for the animal if nobody claims it.

That's assuming it's not run by PETA. Their kill rate is astronomical. Those people are bigger hypocrites than the big-haired shouters on religious TV telling little old ladies to send in their grocery money.

No, there are dog owners who's pets do get away by mistake. Then there is white trash that let's their dogs run 24/7. Two different things. An itchy trigger finger is pitiful excuse to combine the two into a clear conscience.

A dog worrying livestock isn't a "mistake", it's a dead dog and a clear conscience and only contempt for idiots who think so little of people that they think animals are on the same level.

Well, having read your posts carefully, and upon much deliberation; I have concluded the following,
Yes, my pets are on the same level as you.

Dogs get stolen or let out during burglaries... actually happens around here... especially young ones.

The last dog I found was behind a locked gate where the lock was cut and the dog run off... 9 months old.

The owner had put up lost signs and I happen to see one and called... he left his job in SF and said he was on his way...

Never seen anyone so happy... he said he lost a few things when his home was robbed but the only thing he cared about was his baby...

Turned out he is part of a family that owns lumber yards... said if I ever needed anything to call him... he wanted to give me a reward and said only glad the dog is back where it belongs.

Neighbour's Rottweiler smashed through the chicken coup and killed over $700 in show birds . They made good and paid for it . The man of the household is/was the classic irresponsible drunk. Seen him in the stock pickup pull last weekend. 15 minutes later I seen him swaying unsteady holding a drink at the motorhome . He had to have been impaired while pulling the sled.
Anyways the women of the household is about a good of soul as one would wish to meet. She said shoot the d@mmed dog if Mark would not keep his dog under control. About six months later the chicken pen was chewed through again, blood, feathers and more of my little pets torn to bits. Several wounded survivors giving me the "how could you let that happen to me look."
Not to brag but it was a pretty decent shot at the range and speed the dog was moving though my tree plantation . Called Mike to come and get his dog. He showed up with the snowmobile and reverently dragged his beloved pet home down the road. He avoids me to this day . We claimed insurance this time as I couldn't make myself ask his woman and kids to come up with the $$$.
Never had dog problems again with that one.

Thanks Aaron, you said it for me.

Call me what you want... if the tables are turned, and my dog is in your yard, trying to bite your kids, by all means, protect them by any means nessasary. You'll not hear a foul word from me, only an apology...

Any dog I have that is threatening kids would already be shot. My dog might be on your land, but he won't be threatening anyone.
