GC1700 series gear box oil change on mmm.

Another day of learning about mmm decks.

1. Guess how many grease zerks there are on an MF mmm deck.
If you guessed 6 or 8 . . you'd be wrong. The answer is 12 if you include the following:

Rear deck wheels 1 each times 2
Front deck wheels 2 each x 2
Spindle 1 each x 3
Tension pulley 1 each x 1
Gear box shaft 1
Shaft to mid pto 1

Plus there are 2 spots to apply grease that don't have zirks (gear box race and shaft to pto snap ring)

2. I always use a high temp RED grease so it shows up. Last year I greased my deck 3 times . . Always till grease showed . . Or 3 pumps where I couldn't see (covers on etc.) Well today I had all the covers off and cleaned everything up. Then I greased everything. I was a little surprised how the spindle zirks I pumped 5 times each and still didn't show grease coming out . . So 3 more pumps each and dark grease came out (not my red color). So obviously 3 times last year x 3 pumps each on each spindle had not driven old grease out and now 8 pumps each is finally pushing out the old grease. My point is . . The spindles sure seem to take considerable grease.

Woah, I was surprised today too when I greased my MMM. The spindles took a ton. I need to order another couple tubes from amsoil.....

I know it is over kill, but I grease my deck before every use. I hit the drive shaft about every other use. Knock on wood, but I have never had a spindle bearing go down in any of my mowers that had grease fittings.

Wow . . Every time ???? That would be more than once a week for me lol.

I never know what is the best "type" to use because I want to use one type for all my regular grease efforts and then I have a separate gun for non-important greasing needs.

My regular grease is a high temp red colored product by Mystic. I thought the high temp would be preferred for spindle lubrication . . Plus the red is easy to see.

Then for low end needs like wheels on wheelbarrows or carts I use just the lithium dark colored choice for my alternate uses.

Any suggestions on a better choice or type for my tractor and mower equipment (than my red high temp) ?

I use Lucas red tacky mostly, but I will use any EP grease if nothing else is available. I mow for over two hours straight each and every time I mow. I use my air grease gun and that cuts down time. Grease is cheap and I mean to get my money's worth out of this machine.

Jonohio, I noticed the same-- those spindles do use up the grease pretty well; they can take a number of pumps to re-fill. Must be a chamber in there or something.

I haven't used my Deck yet MF 2325, Bought it off CL for 600 bucks, Think I'll go ahead and service the fluid and make sure I grease it all up before I attempt to mount it up for the first time. Purchased a Titan Ballast box off Ebay so I can take off the Hoe for storage instead of weight.
