When they hear the call of a pileated woodpecker, and ask, "What in the world is that?" Then you point it out to them and show them that it's the size of a crow, and they say, "NO WAY!" :D

I know this is not how you meant it but it IS a danged BIG woodpecker. First one I ever saw was also the biggest (at least that's what I'm convinced of. Had to been 3ft long! Was in the Ozarks.

I never said that. I said a neighbors pet deserves a chance. I think a problem dog killing livestock is a different situation, and shooting it would be my last choice.

I agree, I don't WANT to shoot my neighbors animal... no more than they want their animal killing my kids/wife's pet rabbits in our yard, which happened last summer. Dog was caught, unharmed, and returned. Neighbor said to shot it if it happens again. His words.

Would you let your neighbors dog bite you in your own yard, and not react?

I was planning on not replying to this topic any further... and will not from this point.

Couple years ago I went back to college and took a biology class. We took a field trip to a local park as part of our ecology section. It was a deeply wooded section with a natural lake. We were on a hiking trail. Being older than the others, I hung back to bring up the rear. Watching the city kids freak out about getting close to a lake with leaf debris, sticks, twigs, etc. was funny. Watching the other teens walk with their faces glued to their cell phones was disappointing. Watching the scared look on some of their faces for being deep in the woods made me shake my head.

I have seen real estate with a car full of potential buyers turn around once they had a chance, soon after they left the pavement.Of the ones that actually move here, many only last a year or two.
No 7/11 or other little store. Very few friends to visit with & its too far to town.
Of course they need sidewalks & street lights.
Instead of working they need to work out at a gym.

They also run to the store every few minutes for something they can't live without.

Yeah, we've fallen into that nasty city habit. We're only fifteen minutes away from a Homeland...now...after the city moved out to greet us a few years ago.

We are just minutes from schools, fast food, chain drug & grocery stores, banks, auto parts, HD etc, but to look around from our mailboxes you'd think we were ten miles from any of these.

18 YO kid comes to visit his aunt, as he has done for most of his life. Her house is in front of mine in a row of six or so on both sides of the road surrounded by fields and woods. (btw, A great place to 'dump' unwanted animals in front of the orchard next door.)

Auntie's 'guest house' is the camper she & fiance sleep in most summer nights. (TV, AC, Running water) It's in the back of her yard ~1/3 of the way down/along the driveway toward my house.

"T__, would you like to sleep in the camper tonight?"

"Uh no, Jason or somebody might find me and ... (mumble) ... " (IMO, he really should get out more.)

In my generation, a guy like T__ who grew up where I did would expect the first nuclear bomb to hit our town.

No Street Lights and Starbucks top the list of disqualifiers.

Not to be overlooked in California is lack of fire hydrants means insurance may not be available or at a price that makes sense.
