I have two Garmin GPS units. One is the hand held Garmin 60 CSX that I use for geocaching and the other is the Garmin Nav V that I mount on my motorcycle. Both display standard maps as you would find in a map book. Additionally, the hand held unit also displays topography on top of its displayed map view.
I've never seen a GPS unit that displays as the example CCWKen attached.
I've used the Nat Geo TOPO state series on both my home computer & hand held unit. Unfortunately, last time I checked they were no longer being produced and updates were no longer being provided. They were expensive - $50/state - but were excellent, as a tool, for both on & off road trip planning.
