I grew up in a small town and still live there although it's not so small anymore. When I built my current house out in the woods, there was no one around. Dirt road, no street lights, just woods and my house in the woods a few hundred feet off the road in the woods. Unable to see it from the road.
The first time my wife and I went outside at about midnight, we were surprised that it was so dark, we actually couldn't see our feet. It was so great ! Standing there in the clearing, not able to see anything but when we looked up, we could see the 'dust' of the galaxy in the sky.
Today the road is paved, there's a street light at the end of our dirt driveway and there's 1,000+ houses less than a mile away. No more galaxy dust with the light pollution we have now. I'm still surrounded by several hundred acres of woods on all sides, so I guess I'm better off than most.
When I built my house, my cousin in RI built a house in a development. He was so proud of the house, 20 feet off the road/sidewalk. Double wide, 25 ft long driveway. Typical development, but it had a couple rows of dense trees in the back that separated his back yard from his neighbor's. He was telling me that he could take a leak off his back steps and his neighbor couldn't see him. I told him I can take one off my front steps and have many times.
Speaking of leaking, a city guy will step out of the shower to take one. I too always carry TP or kleenex in my truck. When a man's gotta go, a man's gotta go.
