Breakfast Warning roadkill story

I like squirrel, but man is it a lot of work for so little meat. Can't say I would have eaten a free one like that, Duwop, regardless of how fresh. No idea how it was acting before it committed suicide.

Squirrel season opens 01 August in Illinois. But, I can never motivate myself to shoot any before it starts getting cool at least. After the first frost was always the general rule when I was growing up (same for rabbits). Helps to weed out the sick ones.

PJ, I grew up in northern Illinios and Indiana and yes lacked any motivation to hunt before the frosts. Here in western Virginia, squirrel opens Sept 3 and first frost isn't until Oct 15 or there bouts that's a waste of 6 good weeks. I usually only hunt Deer and squirrel deer hunting ends 1st Jan. And squirrel ends I think 1 st of Feb or Mar. which works to about 6 months without hunting so come early Sept I'm ready to hunt. My squirrel gun is my varmit weapon and I have been seeing a fox on the game cams and this past spring was missing chickens so I've always got a weapon near so if a squirrel presents itself and its season I'm game.

On another thought growing up in Illinois I miss pheasant season. Pheasant cooked in gravey is something I miss, here I'd have to pay a game farm nearby to hunt pheasants and I just refuse to pay for the lisence and pay the farm too.

I was taught to wait till after the frost too but since the state allows squirrel hunting in Sept and one week in June that they must be safe to eat in warmer weather.
That first frost thing/parasites applies to bunny rabbits I think (don't touch in any month without an "R" in it). Tree rats should be ok any time of year. But back to the story...I know a guy that watches the roads like an eagle...depending on temperature, if something wasn't dead on his way to work but was on his way home, it likely ended up on the grill. Years ago he said he killed a deer (in season) on a Sunday but ate fresh heart the night before...when questioned, he said "I robbed a "gut-pile"...doesn't everybody")?

I used to love squirrels, but haven't eaten any in more than 30 years now. Although if the opportunity presented itself, I'd sure have one to eat.

Yeah I grew up eating it. Rolled in flour with salt and pepper then pan fried and don't forget the pan gravy. It tasted pretty good as I remember. That's how I learned to shoot too. Go squirrel hunting with a single shot, bolt action 22 and you learn to be a pretty good shot pretty quick. I don't have the same eyes I did then though.
