I didn't know what to put on the quial just salt and pepper. I'll look into my wild game book for recipes. So you ain't no cook.
I like squirrel, but man is it a lot of work for so little meat. Can't say I would have eaten a free one like that, Duwop, regardless of how fresh. No idea how it was acting before it committed suicide.
Squirrel season opens 01 August in Illinois. But, I can never motivate myself to shoot any before it starts getting cool at least. After the first frost was always the general rule when I was growing up (same for rabbits). Helps to weed out the sick ones.
That first frost thing/parasites applies to bunny rabbits I think (don't touch in any month without an "R" in it). Tree rats should be ok any time of year. But back to the story...I know a guy that watches the roads like an eagle...depending on temperature, if something wasn't dead on his way to work but was on his way home, it likely ended up on the grill. Years ago he said he killed a deer (in season) on a Sunday but ate fresh heart the night before...when questioned, he said "I robbed a "gut-pile"...doesn't everybody")?I was taught to wait till after the frost too but since the state allows squirrel hunting in Sept and one week in June that they must be safe to eat in warmer weather.
I used to love squirrels, but haven't eaten any in more than 30 years now. Although if the opportunity presented itself, I'd sure have one to eat.
What about the other white meat......possum!
