12v Fuel Transfer Pumps

We use Goldenrod 596-3/4 Water-Block fuel Filter. Spin on type, $29. for the filter and mount. Very happy with them.

That's the same pump I have used for the past 15 years or so. At one time I had the same goldenrod filter (although non water block) followed inline by a spin on water block cartridge. I have since switched to using just the spin on water block filter.
The bowl filter lets you see the junk that it has caught, but I prefer the convenience of a spin on cartridge. I believe either of the goldenrod filters (water block or not) are 10u filters.
Do yourself a favor now and but an auto shutoff nozzle!

Thanks for the info. Good to know your pump has been working so well. Is yours in a location that is covered or uncovered?

I keep getting different specs on the micron levels for those filters. Some say 17, some 10 I think I saw one listed 3.

I put together a 12v pump from HF and filter apparatus and hose from TSC. Works well. Cheap.

I'll prob have to pick up a few more parts at TSC to complete it. I think TSC sells GPI and Cim-Tek filters. Which did you end up with?

Cool. I went with the clear bowl filter because of the drain on it. Im hoping that might give me a few more gallons of usage out of it. Maybe not. We'll see.

How far should the fuel pick up be off the bottom? I would imagine a few inches to keep from picking up water and sludge accumulation. I am planning on having the the pump and bottom drain on opposite sides and tilt the tank towards the drain.

I think I might need a few more inches of length in the pick up though.

The filter is a GoldenRod 596-5 Brand seems to be "DL". Bought the filter a few years ago at TSC so maybe they have changed suppliers.

My system worked well and shut itself down as designed when I got a water contaminated batch of fuel. Since then I have just been using 5 gallon cans of diesel instead of the 30 gallon tank so don't use it anymore even though I bought a replacement filter. I'd be happy to sell you the whole outfit but doubt shipping would be economical.

I used to know what the micron rating meant (when correctly described). I believe the old spec (still frequently used to make the filter sound better) is called "nominal" which means a 10u filter will catch 50% of 10u particles. I do know that a 3u filter would have to be pretty large to permit reasonable fuel pumping flow. I had a 3u hydraulic filter on my previous tractor that was I believe 3u (b3) that filters 99.9(9?) of the 3u particles at still only 3 gal per min. The thing was larger than a loaf of bread. Anyway.... I probably shouldn't be discussing things I am not sure of.
As far as the pump is concerned, it lives outside on my pickup truck transfer tank with the 12v plug inside a bed mounted tool box. I've painted it twice over the years, currently Rustoleum hammered metal silver.

Made some progress on my tank.

I ended up replacing the pvc pickup with a 36" steel one and put a 45* end on the suction side.

I got the vented fill cap on. I did not anticipate the center not being a 2" threaded hole. Shame on me for not paying attention. So I have a 1.5" bung to pick up yet to cap it.

I also replaced the drain that was leaking with a new one with a ball valve instead of the screw-in/out type. No more leaks.

Tank needs a wash yet and resprayed with some white paint.

Im still not sure about the platform. I ended up using that 4x8 sheet of plywood for sizing and then the drain leaked. I think I might frame in a 4x8 space and fill it with rock. Not sure i am committed to its location so I am hesitant to pour a concrete pad.

That will hold a serious volume of fuel. Looks like a nice setup.

Yes, I agree, Looks like a nice setup. If still unsure on placement, I would be a little nervous on it shifting or toppling without anchored to concrete. Kind of top-heavy?? 1950 lbs plus the tank. So your frame you spoke of with a gravel base, .... are you thinking like treated 6x6's and anchoring to them?
