Deere 1070 Clutch Pedal Adjustment???

Hi everyone.

I have a John Deere 1070 and am having a problem with the clutch or clutch pedal.

The clutch pedal doesn't have any free travel in the up (foot off) position. When I depress the clutch pedal, the tractor is fully disengaged within about 1 inch of travel.

This also affects the "smoothness" when I release the clutch. When I push the clutch to the floor, shift into gear, then slowly release the clutch pedal, the tractor doesn't move until the pedal is almost to the top (within 1 inch) of the foot-off the pedal position. And when I reach that one inch area, it goes from fully disengaged, to fully engaged.. While its not so bad in my fast gears, when I'm in low gear, the tractor wants to jerk when it takes off.

Is this a simple clutch pedal adjustment? or is this an actual clutch problem? The tractor is a 1070 and gets used daily for minor things. I do not notice any slippage as I can pull a bottom plow fully buried without any problems.

Did you replace the clutch after asking about it in 2014? Or just putting up with it for these last two years?

No problem with that, but would be interested to know if it is a replacement clutch.

Is it a dual stage clutch for PTO and transmission ??

No, I never replaced the clutch.. I think its always been a pedal adjustment issue but this summer its getting worse. I've been using the tractor a lot this summer because we have 5 pigs. When we feed them, I fill the bucket up with leafy greens and brewers grains and just dump it over the fence twice a day..

I think the short travel between engaged and disengaged might just be a characteristic of my tractor but the position where this used to happen used to be somewhere in the middle of the range of pedal travel.. Now it happens when the pedal is almost in the far up (foot off) position.

I'll try adjusting it and see what happens..

UPDATE:
I happen to have the service manual for my tractor and the specifications call for about 5/8 to 1 inch of free travel on the clutch pedal before resistance is felt. I do have about 1 inch of free travel before the spring kicks in and I feel resistance.

I should not have said that I don't have any free travel in the clutch pedal when in the UP position because now I know what "Free travel" means and how it applies to the clutch pedal.

What I should have done is describe my condition a bit better, so here goes:

When I depress the clutch pedal, it has about 1 inch of free movement until I feel resistance.. Releasing the clutch by pushing down on the pedal is easy... its re-engaging that seems to be a problem.

When I'm in gear and I let my foot off the clutch, when the clutch begins to engage, there's only about 1/4 inch of movement from the distance the clutch begins to engage to being fully engaged. This makes it very difficult to start moving forward smoothly and often results in the tractor "jerking".. In fact, I have to lower the engine RPM's to idle before releasing the clutch or the whole tractor will jerk forward.. I'm starting to get whip-lash from it...

Any idea's?

Like maybe time to do some R&R on the clutch? Sounds like the clutch disks may be worn out, or don't have good enough surfaces (have heard that they can lose some of the facing that affects the "grab" condition you have).

I moved 6 round bales today using my 870. The clutch has about 1/4" of engaged to disenguaged travel. I did not take a tape measure out, but I looked down and that is what I saw. Note that some people really ride a clutch which can cause some problems. My tractor has low hours at less than 800 hours and I am easy on a clutch, even when moving manure piles.

Have you lubricated all the grease fittings? Have you oiled the shaft where it goes through the bell housing on both sides of the transmission? I have tried to oil those two pivots but I still have a slight squeek. I guess I may split the tractor sometime if I ever get a big enough garage to do such a thing.

I have driven clutch vehicles since 1977. I know I have driven over a million miles with clutch equiped cars. I know that isn't a lot of miles for some people but I get plenty of stop and go in Atlanta traffic. My tractor clutch doesn't really feel any different than my VW cars or Toyota trucks. I have driven a few 2 ton trucks too and clutches all seemed to work about the same to me.

I am with the others that if you have lots of experience using a clutch and this one is a bear then you may be due for a fresh driven disk and some other parts.
