Yeah, we had a 70 Nova with a column shifter that would lock up sometimes. Mom would hop out, whip open the hood, reach in there and click the linkage by the steering shaft, hop back in and off we'd go.

My kids are grown now but they both rode with me on a rider. I had one arm around them one on the stearing wheel.

All things I think are more unsafe than a kid on a mower.
People flying through a crowded parking lot
Kids not on a mower but around it while in operation
These days kids playing on a city sidewalk no parent around
Kids on a bike on the road in town
Kids on a quad

IMHO all of the above are more unsafe than being held safely by dad on a mower. Which of the above are you going up to the parent and telling them to stop doing it? Again.. IMO .. and you have yours.. don't impose yours on me by coming up to me and telling me I'm being unsafe.

neighbour had one of his twins fall out of the tractor cab while be was backing up and was run over by a front tire. While the Dad was turned around looking behind the three yr old opened the cab door. The dad did not hear any sound difference because the back window was out of the cab to warn him. Child dies in farm incident | Kincardine News

Response...

Farming is a dangerous occupation, or can be, no doubt about it. But if you understand the farm mentality, worked on many and married a farmers daughter, you understand most farmers accept some risk with their kids to have them a part of the farm lifestyle.

Accidents happen, I can probably go find you incidents where kids were hit on the road riding bikes with their parents. You can't put your kids in a box and surround them with packing peanuts to keep them safe.

Kids being allowed to ride in cars or just living in cities is more dangerous then riding on a mower with an adult.

My 1970 Stepside would do the same at the most inopportune times... raise the hood and slide the linkages so they would line up.

Growing up on the streets of East Oakland and walking past the ****'s Angels Club House, the Black Panthers, Symbionese Liberation Front, Weatherman Underground, Patty Hearst Debacle, Earth First, Assassinations of elected officials...

I can assure you my parents say my Grandparents farm as a refuge of safety where kids could just be kids...

*** Note about the HeII's Angles... those burly guys were always nice to us kids... we were kids and had no idea what they were into or doing other than they rode LOUD motorcycles and had patches on the leather jackets... whatever Sonny Barger is/was... he was nice to us kids just wanting to check out his bike and custom shop...

One could say that nothing is more pitiful than watching someone hold up traffic to back into a drive when they could just pull in;)

For the most part I have agreed with your posts BUT this one I will have to argue as its definitely a personal peeve for me! Its best to back into the parking lot/space/driveway when you have some control and right-of-way as the lead car rather than in most cases backing out with limited visibility and no control or ability to properly estimate the speed of an approaching car.

I however really liked the comparison of playing sports. I wasn't allowed to play sports growing up except with friends as I could get hurt! I could however work on the farm, my uncles boot leg coal mine, under the table at the local garage, hang from the side of the garbage truck working for the township and was allowed to own and shoot my own guns almost as long as I can remember. Funny how some things can be considered more dangerous than others but I have pictures of me riding on the mower with my grandfather and I was so young I simply don't remember it.
WHat I do remember is that no one I knew growing up had an accident that came from mowing grass but I can remember many of my friends coming to school on crutches, with casts on arms and wearing slings from sports injuries! I have a cousin who will never walk right again because injuries to his knee playing football.
My brother hurt himself so many times on his bicycle that I could not possibly remember them all and some were very serious, My cousin broke his jaw, his leg and his arm in 3 different accidents with his and myself cant count all the scars on my body but not one injury from mowing grass, operating a tractor or hanging from a beam while building a barn!
My good friend had severe acid burns from chemistry class when an accident occurred at school but yet she never seemed to be able to get run over by her mother with the lawn mower, nor did she fall off the back of my motorcycle or did she get a bullet in her when we would all go out in the mountain shooting or drown when swimming in the quarry.
So my experience in life leads me to wonder why the people who moved out here from the city spent so much time watching their neighbor and condemning him because he was cutting grass with his youngest on his lap that they drove straight into a tree rather than minding their own business and watching the road . They actually admitted to this and even after, still had the audacity to argue with him about it ! It takes all types to make the world go around and that experience also has shown me those with less experience growing up will most likely be the ones who make the fatal mistakes when they get older.

The point could be made it is safer on many counts for a small child to be on your lap supervised than off the tractor...

We don't all have the luxury of unlimited help and chores still need doing.

Just about any time together is the opportunity to teach.

I have a lot of retired friends... one is now 90 with a 14 year old grand daughter... he was there from day one for her the moment his daughter returned to work...

He did many tasks with her at his side... including mowing around the house... it's not like he could leave her and later he decided it was safer to be on the mower than off and around it.

He was in the service when his one and only child was born... so no parenting experience to fall back on... it was like a second chance for him and they are very close... after school homework... makes dinner... etc. all things new to him.

Of course a lot of what is offered as advice is dependant on how it is presented... tact goes a long way... this especially true with the rearing of kids.

When I go to my Mom's condo, I always back in on account of small parking spaces. It annoys me to no end how people will try and go around you while trying to do so.

I won't tell anyone what to do but I will tell you what I would do in the same situation. I would mind my own danged business. There's a good chance the neighbor would tell me the same.

I don't let my 4 year old near my mower or tractor. I was told my father let him ride with him on his zero turn mower but they weren't cutting grass at the time. I still cringed when I heard about it and almost mentioned it to my father.

Unless my neighbors are doing something that effects me or my family I never interfere in their business and they don't interfere in ours. About the only thing I've asked our neighbors to do is to fix their invisible dog fence. They didn't and I ran over and killed one of their dogs. Now when I mention the fence isn't working he usually gets to it pretty quickly.
