So...I defend your right to personal freedom and your choice to take your kid or grandchild on a riding mower. However I will be the first to deny you any sympathy whatsoever if that kid gets hurt. Its your choice and therefore your responsibility. However this isn't how our current America works. Kid will get hurt, Grandpa will feel like crap and then sue lawnmower manufacturer for some perceived liability. Cost of lawnmower improvement will be passed on to normal consumers and you and I will ultimately pay for Grandpas decision.

My sons have learned to cut wood, use power tools, swim in a pond, use the lawnmower, drive the gator, plow the driveway with a 4 wheeler, play hockey on a pond, shot a shotgun, rifle, pistol, swim in the ocean - you get the picture. BUT guys, lets not be to cavalier about safety and being careful with our equipment when children are around. Think for one minute how your life would change if you killed your child or grandchild. My point, be safe and use some common sense, children can do the unexpected in the blink of an eye.:2cents:

These are good words and adding on to this.. Teach THEM and their friends, as their friends come into your world, to start thinking about safety at an early age. This includes safety as they do all of the above. Drill that into them and you can feel much better about them doing whatever they do. Everyone will always have a varying opinion on what is a safe activity for a kid, but we should be able to agree on a lot of safety points that anyone should follow when doing those activities (i.e. when circling a ROUNDABOUT multiple times on your lawn tractor have an SMV sign on the front and the back )

Don't blame grandpa. Blame the sleazy ambulance chasing lawyers AND their good buddies in government that set this idiotic chain of events in motion. Every time some drunken moron reaches under a mower deck to pick up his dropped can of Meister Brau he wins the lottery. So typical for the Progressive Society this country has become where everybody is responsible for everybody else's stupidity while rewarding fool who committed the act. It doesn't make a bit of sense to me and never did. Common sense and reasonableness are terms that are losing their meaning while being replaced by things like "liability" , meanwhile the legal eagles just keep cleaning up.

All that litigation history also explains the very long cautions, warnings and caveats section of owners' manuals. Sometimes I read those and think, "who would do that!?"...but the warning is usually there because some idiot DID do that. Presumably, the lawyers think that giving the warning will absolve them of liability should the warning be ignored. Sadly, in the face of an ingenious fool, there is no such thing as "foolproof"...there is always another, unlisted, way to misuse equipment and get somebody hurt or killed.

Back on topic, I just found this and I am guilty. I have an LT180 rider with a 42" deck and all the guards. If my kid fell, (not going to happen), they would just fall out on the grass as the deck barely protrudes the footrests.

Worse yet, is a child or a pet that would like to follow you behind the machine and you not know that he is there, and then you back up...very dangerous.
