12v Fuel Transfer Pumps

I can't really say how my setup does this: only had it for about 6 months. It's a "certified" diesel fuel tank (sold specifically for it), in which case I'd think that it ought to be designed with such things in mind? It has one hole that has a radiator cap on it; that obviously should work for positive pressure, but no idea on negative pressure. I don't pump a lot of fuel out at a time so maybe that's why I haven't encountered any problems. I tend to periodically twist the cap and let out pressure (built up from outside temperatures), maybe I don't need to?

** "Question: What practices do people take when fueling up using 12v power? I've always heard to not use the power from the vehicle that's being fueled. " **

I am actually going to upgrade my setup to have a deep cycle sealed battery, in a case, beside the tank to connect too. Popping the hood to connect and then lowering the hood to get to the fill cap is problematic. Yes I know I can install a female plug outside, but for the cost and trouble I am taking a different approach. I picked up a small solar panel with battery charger/tender (still works) at a yard sale a week ago. It should keep the battery charged between uses. Now to pick a battery brand and model.

It kind of depends on how much pumping you're going to be doing.

I've been using these batteries for a while now:

UPG 12V 9AH Internal Thread AGM SLA Emergency Lighting Battery UB129 Group 27 | eBay

Used for some portable electronet fencing, some pumping, and currently is operating a nestbox door (overkill- my small battery gave up the ghost; finally decided to put my solar panels to use and they're keeping things charged and I don't worry about forgetting to charge the battery anymore!).

Not sure if I'll keep with the current practice of using my Polaris' power/battery for pumping fuel. It's not a hassle, so far.

Measured my tank yesterday, I got 18 cu ft. exactly. My handy little converter program says that is 134.6494 gallons.

Super! Now I need to make a platform for it and then get a pump and filter.

Thanks,

I got my two filters connected inline and pressure tested. Works well. I also added a shutoff valve between the pump and the filters.

Looks good. Why the shutoff valve?

Just in case. Theres a couple scenarios I can think of it would be helpful with.

Chances are it will just sit there open for the life of its use.

Better to have it and not need it.

What scenarios? Just curious as when you shut off the pump the flow stops. Maybe I am missing something but I can't figure out why it would be needed.
