"Barrow, Alaska" to become "Utqiagvik, Alaska.."

People are trying to change the name of Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Since I along with almost everyone in the lower 48 never plan to visit "Barrow" or any other name that they change it too, I could care less although I was familiar with the name Barrow, I likely will never attempt to look up UTGIAGVIK on Google Earth.

That is normal for Alaska as they have been trying to go back to all original names since the federal government returned most of the land back to the local tribes in the early 80's. All the good fishing areas went from free to over $100.00 a day and most of the best hunting areas went from the coast of getting there to an added $1,000.00 when that happened. Meaning ONLY rich tourist could afford it now.

Places I walked into for years and years, just to hunt rabbits and grouse for the day, all of a sudden were gated off and posted! This is miles out in the bush, not along some busy road with houses by it!!

Landing on a gravel bar out in the bush to hunt moose, and along would come a native DEMANDING $100.00 because you landed there... These were spots that were a long way out and <white> folks had been landing/hunting there for many many years...

Doesn't surprise me. A lot of resentment towards the white man and the Federal government in those parts. It's a pretty bleak place. I visited Barrow and some of the neighboring towns on a work related matter many years ago.

It wouldn't surprise me if Canada started adopting names from the middle east.

Most of my life, I have been controlled, by what I should listen to and watch in the media, all in the name of protecting Canadian Culture.

We used to always go to the Copper River for the 00:01, June 1st, start of Salmon fishing but when they started charging $100.00 a day we stopped that fast. Since ever native up there was already getting a monthly check for Uncle Sugar, the tribes didn't have to gouge the locals.
