I live in town. Old houses, all close together. Backdoor neighbor had a yappy little dog of some sort that would just bark. No provocation. Rapid high pitched bark. Hours at a time.
Literally. And you could hear it indoors over the TV or music. We like to eat dinner on our back porch and the dog would make it so unpleasant that we couldn't.

Owner was an older lady. We had mutual friends as is the case in lots of small urban areas. Nice lady. Maybe a bit of a drinker. Maybe a little dementia setting in.

I finally went over there one day to introduce myself. We got acquainted and I told her if shed needed anything to just call me. I brought up the subject of the dog and she agreed to put the dog inside whenever it started barking. This worked pretty well. sometimes she'd leave it out there longer than I liked and I'd just call and tell her it was time to let the dog in and she'd do it.

On the other hand a couple of neighbors down the street almost came to blows over an incessantly barking Pekingese and the police ended up getting involved and there are still hard feelings. The dog owner, was in the wrong of course. In my opinion there is not one single reason on earth a dog owner should allow his dog to bother his neighbors in any way. It is rude and inconsiderate.

I have a new 8 month old Lab. He has a tendency to bark. He stays outdoors some. I will do whatever it takes to break that habit. Shock collar is being ordered at this moment.

Now, out in the sticks things are different. Dogs that bark a long way off or that I cannot hear inside my house are not a problem. In town, different story.

Regarding the shock collar, how does the collar know when the barking is nuisance and when it is warranted? I want my dog to bark when there is a reason, but not just to bark...

Yeah, we have normal cat noises. Then we have that special cat noise that means "There's gonna be a huge furball on the carpet if you don't get up and move me in 5 seconds!"

For some reason, every cat or dog we've every had thinks it has to run from the hard floor to the carpet to barf!

How about church organs? Oh, bring them on, loud as can be.
perhaps because I sit in silence mostly in my faith can I appreciate the wonderful
sounds coming out of giant church pipe organs.

I toured Europe only once and went in many large cathedrals, only once was music playing
and it was utterly magical. No matter what you believed in, it was moving.
If a train can rumble my house, why not a pipe organ?

aren't big pipe organs the original subwoofers?...

Regarding the shock collar, how does the collar know when the barking is nuisance and when it is warranted? I want my dog to bark when there is a reason, but not just to bark...

I don't want my dog to bark at all. So for me there is no warranted barking. I do not need or want a dog for home defense or theft deterrent. My dog is a Lab, I want him to be as friendly and non-threatening as possible. He does not _need_ to bark to be happy or healthy. Currently he has a deep, booming, threatening bark. He barks at people walking down the street and his hackles go up (tail still wagging). He does this when we play and rough house in the yard so I know he is not being aggressive or threatening but other people don't know that and he can look scary. I never want anyone to be afraid of or threatened by my dog. I never want anyone to be disturbed or irritated by my dog.

He is still only 8 months and we're working with him. We taught our previous lab not to bark, without using a collar. Not sure about this one. He is super friendly, we just have to make him look and behave that way.

my vision of He@@ could include being stuck in a room with a tiny dog yapping constantly.
The kind of dog that seems to have no purpose in life but to annoy. Well, not to its owner unless the owner is masochistic.

Isn't there a big difference between a necessary woof for Yo, the house is burning, or Yo someone is stealing your car, and
an annoying bark that just keeps going on and on because the dog sees or hears a squirrel, or is lonely or wants to talk to the dog on the next farm,
who knows. Barks to me can have good purpose if used to alert, particularly if there is a danger.
Like declawing a cat, takes some function away. Although I can certainly see in certain environments how gentle training could teach a dog to alert in
other manners. To me it's like getting a car without a horn...although if the car's horn is way too loud, well...

My next door neighbor's German Shepherd had a loneliness barking problem, plus she barked at any voices that even carried on the wind.
Problem was she was left home alone. As she has gotten older, the problem has totally gone away. Thankfully.

We were in Ireland last summer and visited a number of cathedrals and churches. In Dublin, we toured Christ Church which has this organ, The Organ - Christ Church Cathedral Dublin : Christ Church Cathedral Dublin We were on a "mission" to find the church that holds St. Valentine's bones and we walked by St. Patrick's cathedral but did not have time to go inside. Someday we will return. We hope. Around the corner from St. Patrick's we found White Friar Street Church which has the shrine to St. Valentine. Tis "only" a church compared to the big cathedrals but it too was very impressive.

The organ in Christ Church is impressive to say the least. I would love to hear that organ playing some Bach.

I would not mind hearing that every Sunday! :thumbsup::laughing::laughing::laughing:
