Just don't go near it, don't even get off(or out) of the tractor with the pto engaged no matter what implement is in use. My tractor has an alarm that will damage your hearing if you open the cab door with the pto engaged.

With some implements you have to get off the tractor while the pto is engaged. Two that come to mind are chippers and logging winches.

You're right, I was exaggerating a bit. But if you HAVE to work near a spinning shaft, and there are safety devices available, then by all means, use them. I don't use chippers or winches, but I do use a post hole digger. However I really don't have to get off the tractor with it engaged, and I don't use it very often.
