I bought a LOT of G70 bulk chain when my hardware store went belly up. I can't remember what size it is though. It was a killer deal I couldn't pass up.

I used calipers to measure it. The measurement was larger than 5/16 but smaller than 3/8. ???? Very confused. A 5/16 G70 grab hook grabs it and fits nicely. Not too tight, but secure. A 3/8 G70 grab hook grabs it reasonably securely, but with some slop.

I'm guessing I have 5/16 chain? And if I do, can I use my 3/8 chain binders with 5/16 chain? I have one load binder that is 5/16, a couple that are 5/16 or 3/8, and a couple that are 3/8 or 1/2. The ones that are 3/8 or 1/2 are pretty sloppy on this chain-- don't think I should use those.

And, is 5/16 chain rated for securing my tractor during transport? (Massey SCUT) I am also kicking tires on a Kubota Grand L6060, which is much heavier.

I would appreciate any insight. Thanks!

If it 5/16 chain I think you can use 3/8 chain binders.

Most hooks of that size I've seen are rated for both 5/16 & 3/4. The working load limit of your chain needs to be more than that what you are securing. Chain Strength Chart So as long as your machine is under 8k lbs or so 2 5/16 grade 70 chains should be suficient. Additional chains would always be better

The will be fine if it grabs as you say.

Lately, I have seen binders listed as both 5/16 x 3/8 and 3/8 x 1/2

So while both can technically be called a 3/8" chain binder......I dont think I would use the 3/8 x 1/2 binders on 5/16 chain.

And 5/16 chain has a WLL of 4700#.

So even a fullly loaded up, cab, loader, implement....etc the GL6060 shouldnt exceed the weight of what two chains can handle. But you are "supposed" to have 4 chians on the tractor.....one at each corner. And then chains on the implements as well. So yea.....5/16" G70 chain is plenty for a 6060

5/16" G70 is plenty for any compact tractor.

Four 5/16" chains could legally secure a 18,800 lb tractor.

Technically you can do it with two if there is slack between them. I.e. On a Dozer, we take one chain on the rear and one for the front tracks. Hook the binder to the track, the other hook end to the trailer. do this on each side of the trailer. It's good as long as there is slack between the chain in the middle. We would usually lay it over the pin on the rear of the Dozer. Then add one chain for the blade it we were outta there.

Same thing for a tractor if you have the points. One front, one rear, loader and rear implement. There's no way I'm using 6 chains on my tractor. That would be a pain

The point I was getting at, is if tied down at 4 points like you are supposed to, it's 4x the WLL. And with 5/16 chain being 4700#.....it's plenty for a fully loaded out 6000# tractor
