Will a 45 Cal. stop a wild hog?

[ Apparently the bear killed by the Indian woman was a large Grizzly not a polar bear. And the .22 single shot rifle was loaded with a .22 long. NOT even a .22 long rifle cartridge. The .22 long is more rare today, but was pretty common back then, and has less velocity and energy than a .22 long rifle of today. Apparently she put some "insurance" rounds in the bears head after that first shot also. Good idea in my opinion!

What .22 Rifle did Bella Twin use to Kill a World Record Grizzly in 1953? ]

I stand corrected! It has been a while since I read the report but would have sworn it was a Nylon 66. And I didn't know it was a long and not a long rifle. That's about 300fps less. Makes it more impressive.

And being a single shot, makes the first shot even more "gutsy".

Point being a .22 can be quite lethal if the placement of the shot is right.

Yep. They kill a lot of people every year, too.

I'm still not going to choose a .22LR as my self-defense gun. I prefer to have a bit more margin of error.

o what it all boils down to is this "You've got to ask yourself one question. Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk" :)

Even "just a little .22" in your pocket is way better than the .45 in the nightstand back home.

Never leave home without it.

I don't know why a 12 ga with OO buck wouldn't be as effective as anything, especially for shots under 50 yards or in brush and timber. Shooting a charging boar with a scoped rifle would take a pretty cool hand; I would prefer a snap shot with the shotgun. I would have no qualms carrying a shotgun.

Buckshot is worthless on a large animal. Just load slugs. Shot placement is impossible with buckshot. I only tried hunting with buckshot once. Never again.

And if you don't want to carry a shotgun a Judge with .410s 000 buck gives you a pretty good spread at 10 yards.

A .410 is pretty anemic for anything larger than a raccoon. The .45LC has a lot more power. The Judge is just a rat killer.

I chose a Ruger LCR in the .22 magnum caliber. I'm not particularly fond of the hidden hammer feature, but for carrying in a pocket or purse, and if you have to use it close range, the double action is acceptable. Wish the magnum shells were not so hard to find, though.

I recall reading that the majority of gun deaths in the U.S. are by a .22 caliber. Makes sense, since there are so many of them and they are everywhere.

In close range brush areas, 00 or 000 buckshot offers a good solution. 8 to 12, .33 or .36 caliber pellets in each shot (.36 caliber is over 9mm). Shot placement isn't as critical with a 2' or 3' pattern of 12 9mm buckshot per shot.
