Miller Classic Welding Helmet - HELP

I have a Miller, and I SWEAR it gets blurry for the first 1:sec after it switches to dark. Is that my eyes or is that the auto-dark? 1:sec is a long time at the start of a weld. First noticed it with TIG.

That could be your eyes, but first thing I would change is the hood!

Aren't those fancy hoods awfully heavy? This is what they made us wear, now this is heavy. Especially when you had to tilt your head to the side to weld up under something! :thumbdown:

Naw... actually pretty flimsy and light. This is Miller's cheapest auto darkening ($88 on eBay). I first tried the HF but it didn't work so I upgraded to this one. It is much lighter than the more expensive models that have a much larger viewing area. I just can't justify that expense.

Slide that top cover to the left. Push with your thumb on the grooved area with arrow, that says "lock".

Yep... case closed, or should I say case open I went to my LWS and asked the stupid question... they guy said they are very hard to slide and brought out an ice pick. I pressed hard and it finally slid and popped off. Crappy design. Maybe someday I will upgrade when I accidentally drive over this one. Maybe one with 'readers' built in! Thanks for the help.

Yes... for metal and gas. But bought my machine on-line. I'm not a big consumer. They are sort of goobers... but they probably think I'm a nerd.

I would like to find a cheaper 'local' place for metals though (if there is one for little guys)!

When I worked out of my company's Tacoma office I bought all the iron from Tacoma Steel. For my self I buy from North West Steel and Pipe in south Tacoma.

I've known counter Dave at Pacific for over 30-years.

That's just like mine which I broke trying to get the cover off. Looks like many of the electronics are the same brand to brand seeing mine is Hobart.
