Welding Foot Pegs on Dirt Bike

Eventually as these posts progress we tend to start to over analyze the repairs. Sodo has good pics above. Simply remove the old unused material, weld on the new and Ride On !

I'm assuming you've confirmed the new won't fit inside the old mount. The first question I would have is how to get the new separated and not lose the spring tension. Or will it relax when moved all the way around allowing the bolt to just slide out with ease? I can't really tell from the picture. If it's that easy then yes 7018 is the way to go but to be honest I think 6011 would work just fine for this application. I just like 7018 myself because it's just pretty hard to beat.
Just curious why would you just take a weaker electrode to weld with why wouldn't a 7018 do the job?.

Jack707 .. The OP did say he has a G8000 Lincoln Engine Drive. He certainly could use 7018 with no worries.

Personally and only personally I wouldn't be able to lay a stick bead that looked as good as my Mig beads so I suggested Mig. The bike is a restoration so It won't likely see any World trials competition so you could actually braze the pegs on like in the old days if that was your only option. just sayin.

I didn't say that. I simply said you could get away with it. If that's all you have kind of thing. I prefer 7018. Now who hasn't run out and forgot to replenish supplies and only remember it when you start on another project? That's all I was saying.

I use 7018 for a lot of projects it gives a nice bead slag is not to hard to remove.
There a lot of rods a person could use

Yeah I defiantly wont be riding in any world trials :) We have a vintage trials club here in New York State. Its a lot of fun and you get to see and compete against lot of older bikes.

.024 wire. I think thats the max recommended wire for 120v MIGs. Its ER70, about the same material as 7018 (70ksi strength). I set the gas flow at 20. I suppose you are MIG ing with gas then. GOOD.

Just a thought, but if it were me I would consider modifying the new wider peg to fit the original factory frame mount, thus keeping your restoration reversible to original if you chose to..(depending on the peg material of course)
