Ford 1210 side Axle case gasket leaking, Any hints before I dive in?

Hello all,

I have a '86 Ford 1210 that has developed a leak from the gasket of the left side axle housing. #17 in the attached illustration. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience the process to replace this gasket. Specifically, if, once I get to the case, if I remove the 10 or so bolts holding it on, will the case come off? or does the axle locknut (#14) have to be removed from inside the diff case first? I dont think it does, but the Factory service manual is vague on this. Im fairly mechanically inclined, but perhaps overly cautious, and like to know what I'm getting into before I tear into it, so any advice will be appreciated.

Shaped differently, but same design principles as a Kubota L2850 I had apart almost 2 years ago.

I agree, once you remove the bolts it looks like the whole axle housing will come off as an assembly.

One tip: Trace the new gasket on a card board box. Punch holes at each bolt location in your box. Then as you remove bolts put them in corresponding hole. That way if different length bolts are used, you will reassemble to the correct spot.
