why is fuel flowing backwards out of fuel filter. there is a brass nut on the filter head that receives the the fuel line that comes back from the front of the inj. pump the brass nut has BB or ballbearing in it. could this be my problem?

Welcome to TBN
What piece of equipment are you trying to diagnose? My 1st guess is filter is plumbed incorrectly.

Sounds like you are describing a check-valve. If that is an OE part #, then it is supposed to be there.

Haven't finished my first coffee (that's my story....), so I'm having trouble picturing "backwards". Are you saying that your fuel pump is sucking fuel from the injectors, instead of pumping it ?

Rgds, D.

Most diesels have a return fuel line from the injector pump that by design pumps more fuel than needed for each firing. Especially the positive displacement pumps. These push out a certain amount of fuel on each stroke (amount controlled by throttle setting) and then what ever does not flow through the injector between the time it pops open until the time it pops shut winds up back in the tank or at the filter.

I think perhaps this is what you are talking about. there will always be a return fuel line somewhere in the system that recirculates some of the fuel. My dodge truck pumps it back to the tank. My Dexta pumps it back to the fuel filter.

From your description I could be way off base but perhaps this will help

Sounds as if return line needs a check valve or has a faulty check valve.

Is the extra pumping that is done basically how the auto bleed system works on most tractors (that is to purge air that may have entered the system)? My New Holland has hoses that go from the injectors back to a "T" fitting that goes back to the fuel filter and the tank.
