Ford F150-I'm Done.

For all you Toyota fans, I posted a few weeks back about Toyota setting 3.4 billion dollars aside for rusty frame repair on Tacomas and Tundras. This is the second major recall they have had for this problem. I've seen two of them that appear to have this problem, it appears the frame rusts under the bed from what I see. Nothing against Toyota, I just think they have problems also.

They do have problems from time to time. The frame issue is from a bad supplier that screwed up. The difference is Toyota stands behind their products and their customers. Toyota is putting all that money aside to help customers with their vehicles. Now ask yourself... would Ford or GM do that if not forced by the government? Doubt it.

The Ranger has huge frame rust issues in the salt belt. We replaced the rear frame section on my son's 04 because it was swiss cheese near the front of the bed and at the rear bumper. The body on the truck is completely rust free. We got a used Southern rear frame from a local junkyard, it looked perfect. They buy a stack of them to sell to people with the same issue. Do a CL search for Ranger and frame up here and you will see tons of them with frame issues all the way up to when they stopped making them. Where's the recall? My BIL's Toyota got a new frame because of their recall. Absolutely no money out of his pocket including the lender truck.

The problem is with newer Toyota trucks although I can't tell you the exact years. They stand behind their products? There was a class action law suit that forced their hand. I don't think Toyotas are any worse than any other brand I just hate to hear people gush all over them like they are perfect.

Also Toyota has set aside this huge sum of money for the frame repair, but I can almost promise most of it won't be used up. I think the amount set aside assumes every truck built those years needs the frame repaired or replaced. The acutal numbers will be alot less.

If by "newer' you are referring to vehicles older than 2007, then yes, they set aside money to repair or replace frames with excessive rust.

Toyota doesn't do anything magic with their cars... They just seem to generally build them with better materials, parts, and quality control.

There's a reason that most Toyota owners are repeat customers... I can tell you that is certainly NOT because it's the popular choice, especially in my area of Michigan. They've earned my loyalty from quality and low cost of ownership.

Someone in a previous post said they knew someone that had a fleet of trucks and the Toyotas cost the most per mile. I've never met anyone that doesn't like their Toyota, be it a car or a truck, but like a lot of things, I think its more preceptions than reality. Unless you have a fleet of them and track the cost, most people have no idea what the cost of ownership really is.

He said that was based on fuel mileage...

Cost of ownership is generally determined by maintenance costs, expected or actual repair costs, and resale value related to initial price.

I sure wouldn't buy a Toyota up North if you plan to keep it long term. There are plenty of happy owners, but Google "Toyota truck frame recall" and you'll find lots of major recalls and class action lawsuit results. These go from 1995 through 2011, so even with the billions of dollars Toyota has agreed to pay "without admitting any wrongdoing", they continue to produce trucks with a higher risk of frame or spring failure due to rust. All brands have rust issues up North, but most are not affecting the frame like Toyota's. I do wonder about the other brands in the future, since they are cutting weight by using thinner and higher strength steel for the frames.

I agree with most of what you said, but around here, I still have to buy my gas.

Were also getting off track a little bit, the OP was talking about his Ford. We have had several where I work over the years but we lease so they are always under warranty while we drive them. We have three 2014's F150's right now and they are by far the best Ford truck we have ever owned but for the long term, we don't have to deal with it.

Has anyone noticed that it's the non Toyota owners that bash them? Those of us that have them, LOVE them. Those of us that don't have them, and never have, don't like them and post 'facts' about them that they have no real first hand knowledge of.

I can bash Fords, because I've had them. I can bash GM products (worst I've ever owned) because I've had them. I can bash Chrysler products because I've had them. I can bash Datsun, VW, AMC products because I've had them. In nearly 60 years I've had a lot of brands of trucks and cars. In the past 10 or so years, my wife and I have had several Toyota products and we can honestly say NOTHING bad about them. My brother has had several, both sons have had them, my parents have had them, my daughter in law has had them, all with the same results....good DEPENDABLE machines. My 90 year old WWII veteran father said that he's never had a better vehicle than his Toyota. That's a good recommendation coming from a child of the Depression and a brave WWII vet. We buy Toyotas not because we're brand specific but because they're good...period.

So I'm more interested in hearing what people who actually own Toyota Tundras have to say than those who never have or never will own one because they heard that 'they're no good'.
