Dish Network vs Direct TV

I have only had DirecTv, since 1995.

I like the quality, hate the cost.

They always offer some new feature, that I can have for free, if I give them more money. :confused3:

They do seem to be easier to deal with now that they are AT&T owned.

As previously stated, if you have haggle with them, they will give you a loyalty discount, for a 12 month, contract. But, it can be exhausting to get it. You first have to get the initial operator to switch you to the loyalty department , which is sometimes a job in it's self.

I will be very happy, if and when, the day comes that it's all a la carte, on the internet, so I can dump them.

I went from att uverse to direct about 3 months ago. 2 yr contract. If they try to raise the rates on me when the contract is up. I'll leave. I can go with charter cable, back to att uverse or dish. I have options

Interesting comments.

Went from DISH a long time ago to DirecTV due to price and features. I think it was just when HD started coming out? Heck, I don't remember. Anyway, got the BASIC No HD DirecTV package, 5 receivers and set up. Then when things settled down, started the HD upgrades. No setup charges and a $10 a month increase on whatever is wired for HD. Over time, added and removed packages. No charges. Had some attempted price increases, we renegotiated. No issues.

No issues with service calls, no charges, issues with severe weather from the South. No signal when the storms approach. Makes for a great early warning system. No, not kidding. Especially at night.

All in all, it's an OK deal. One just has to manage the account like everything these days. AT&T take over has been quiet for us.

Dish has a new satellite offering for $55/month rate locked for 2 years...190 channels, free HD, free local channels, free receiver, free install...includes Fox News, Fox Business, ESPN, regional sports (MASN here for the Orioles!) free HBO for 1 year. They have both cheaper and more expensive options for fewer and more channels.

We've been with Dish since 1998, and very happy...renegotiated rates and packages a number of times. I love the new remote control. The in-laws have Direct TV and are happy.

Seems like the package I have has too many infomercials & buying channels than I care to have. I wish I could choose my channels. I would delete all of these

I doubt we pay for those, they are surely paying them, to be on there.

I set up my favorites list to ignore them, as well as a few others.

Lots of small packages of live channels with options to add specific genres depending on yoru interests (Sports, Movies, News, etc)

Sling TV
Playstation VUE
DirecTV NOW

Are just a few. It's simply mind boggling how much TV you an watch without satellite or cable these days. I find myself preferring to watch on demand so I can watch what I want when I want. Really the only thing worth watching live is news or sports so for things like movies, or most TV programs its' easier to simply watch on demand than to try and stand in front of a TV at the right time or to spend time recording programs you might watch later.

As internet speeds improve there will be less and less Satellite/Cable TV subscribers. They are already losing subs at alarming rates each month. Satellite TV is going be much like home phone service as it becomes obsolete quickly as new technology as adopted by everyone but the old.

Yes thanks, I have been watching the progress. No packages with everything I need yet.

I have experimented with a Roku.

The internet speed here also needs to improve, but without making it so expensive, there is no savings.

It's kind of third+ world here.

Interesting. What programming is it that you require that is only available on satellite?

I agree on the internet getting expensive which offsets the cost of the satellite but honestly at this point the fast internet is pretty much required with or without the cable internet service so I'm nost sure it can be looked at that simply.

I'm amazed at the free stuff that is available on Roku. I love thier weather channel which is pretty much a knock off of the weather channel and the free movie options are endless which my wife loves.

Our options are dial up, Cell Tower Internet (Viaero), Cell tower internet (Verizon), and the satellite options which are ridiculously expensive from what I have seen. I always laugh when I see how fast some of the options are in bigger cities, holy smokes.

So you're using Roku with cell tower internet?

Hopefully with so many people going to streaming services it will force the cable/satellite companies to change their services.

The biggest reason the bundles are the way they are and you get so many channels you don't want is because there are a few high-priced channels, and they bundle a bunch of the cheap channels with them so it seems like you're getting a better deal.

Also, with digital tuners in TVs now, why can't we just use them instead of requiring a box? I get my local channels in HD from cable with the TV tuner, why can't they make all the channels available that way? Then we could even buy our own DVRs to use.

Until we can pay for a set number of channels and pick the channels and not be required to have a box they're all going to suck.

I think the bundles are the way they are because those loser channels pay the provider to put them in the packages hoping they'll pick up some viewer numbers.

So in the end the provider gets paid by those channels, and gets paid by us for the package which they can advertise as something great i.e., 120 channels.

Geez, it's nearly impossible to just get a simple list of the channels available on Direct Now. From what I saw today, it does seem to be pretty complete.

I would be giving up my DVR, which will be hard to do. I have had the first one available, a series one TIVO, since the day they came out. A DVR is supposed to be coming soon for Direct Now though.

There is currently no support for Roku? So, I would have to buy a compatible box, just to try it, and see if I can even stream it. (Perhaps Santa will me a wifi ready 4k tv?) I'm supposed to be getting up to 12mb service, but it's never even 10.

My phone co. does offer up to 25mb now, but its expensive. And, the only other option, a tower near by, is even more costly.

I will look at this again before March, when my current agreement expires.

There are also people predicting that internet providers will be hyperventilating, if everyone moves to this, because they will be tying up the system will all this streaming. Providers may start limiting, the unlimited internet plans.

I am also waiting for this to be offered on Roku. Supposed to be early next year.
