I have owned better than 25 vehicles of which 75% have had a MPG Computer. In my experience, computers average 1.5MPG higher than hand computed and my truck is no exception. On a rare occasion the two match. My quoted mileage is computer generated minus ~1.5MPG. Of course highway mileage on this type of vehicle is usually higher than in town. Mine is a mix of ~65% highway, ~30% in town and maybe 5% in town stop and go.
As most of us know, driving styles also make a large difference in mileage. I am a very good fuel mileage driver while my wife is just the opposite.
The majority were .3mpg or better tolerance with my one and only Dodge being off by 2.5 MPG.
This is a fleet of Ford, GM, BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Infiniti, Lexus, ect.
