Are you saying people should be held responsible for something they raised actions too? What is this world coming to?

We'll add you on the "people should be responsible for things they own too" list.

I have had a couple dogs durning my 60 some years of living but will never own one again. Experiences? Let me start first by saying one dog is just one dog, two dogs is the start of a pack, and the more you add to that the worse it gets. Many years ago we had a small heard of sheep up north and a pack of dogs killed almost all of them and the ones they didn't we had to shoot ourselves. Not because the sheep were out but because the dogs got in and just had a blast killing them and chewing them up. We did find the pack and destroyed them before they did anymore damage some where else. All 42 sheep were lost.

Then marriage and kids came along and wanted a dog. Lived on a nice piece of property and I was raising a few calves and noticed the dog was getting a little more interested in the calves than he should have in my option. Well make thing short caught him chasing the neighbors calves one day and took a news paper to him. Well a couple days later he did it again. This time the neighbor was home and he seen it too. I asked him did he want to take care of it or did he want me too. Won't tolerate a dog chasing livestock unless it was a herd animal and herding the cattle by my command.

The third one the X wanted her own dog and I agreed but said I didn't want anything to do with it. All hers to deal with. Nothing but trouble from the start. The final straw was I replaced the front door with a 1200 dollar solid mahogany door and trim. The X wanted it also. Well she always let the dog out in the front to do his business and the dog would scratch the door to get back in when he was done. She would do this when she was getting ready for work after I was already gone to work. I never went out the front and knew this was going on. Was picking up leaves in the fall of the year and seen the door and I blew a fuse. Told her I fixed way more than the dog cost and now he tore up a 1200 dollar door it's time to go. Dog cost 200 dollars. Don't understand how a person can have a 200 dollar animal and it cost thousands to fix what they tear up. It's a dog, not a person, hunting dogs have a purpose, herd dogs have a purpose, sled dogs have a purpose but to just get a dog just to say you have one and do nothing with it but to let it run loose and cause other people grief isn't right.

I don't have dogs. Don't want to have to fix what they mess up. I have chickens and cattle. If I feed it I eat it. Neighbors all have dogs. I have had troubles with them also. I own this property for myself and what I want to raise on it. It's not for their use nor there dogs use. My chickens or cattle are not running free messing his stuff up and crapping all over is yard for him to step in. One neighbor told me his dog was like family. I told him my grand kids was like family to but I don't let them run over there and crap on his back porch and tear up his stuff. Have another neighbor has three dogs and there in lies the pack I talked about earlier. I caught them and have several recordings of the crapping where I and the kids walk and play and even right by the back door and tearing up things. I ran them off several times and told the owner the next time I will bring his dogs back to him but he won't like how I will bring them.

Respect another's property, have some conderation for the neighbor. The one neighbor I have has a big dog and I have several recordings of it raising cane with the chickens and chasing the cattle. I told him about his dog and he said his dog never leaves his yard. Don't matter what I would say to him I am wrong and he is right. Funny I know more about what his dog is doing than he does. Security cameras will be my saving grace. In Kentucky it is a law that if a dog is harassing poultry or cattle, hog, sheep or what ever, or distroying property I can kill the dog. And if there is vet bills because of what the dog did, bit or chased thru fence or killed - the dog owner is liable. Be a good neighbor and a better dog owner, keep your dogs on your property. At least for the neighbors that respect your property and have consideration for you and your property.

Well stated.

I have one dog. I take complete responsibility for his actions. I'm surrounded by cattle and my neighbor (1/8 mile away) has a varied flock of geese/ducks/chicken/guineas, etc. My dog does not visit their property and pays no attention to any of the stock around me. He loves to hunt rabbits and squirrels and is rather good at it. But he wouldn't consider chasing stock. It's my responsibility to teach him that. It's also my responsibility to deal with any disobedience of what he's been taught. My dog is very friendly but I do not tolerate him invading anyone's space and he knows how to not do that. If we are standing in a group visiting and he is intruding I get his attention and quietly tell him to stop and he does. He won't even poop in any of the area I mow. He wasn't born with this respect. He was taught it.

I gotta tell y'all, I'm sick of dogs. The trashy new neighbors have two roaming dogs. The owner does nothing to train them. The dogs chase and bark at everything in sight whether it near their property or not. Name it....Mail man in truck, UPS man delivery, Me at my mail box, Me in my back garden no less, My grandkids in my drive way, on and on and on.

The neighbor does nothing but question me about my lack of love for his dogs. Among other issues, several of us neighbors signed a letter to the owner just yesterday.....Either do something (fence) or we will. All of this is so unnecessary and quite beyond reason IMHO.

I agree Mike. Owner needs to be held accountable. Sorry you are going thru this..... You are a much more patient man than I. :(

Holy sh__ ovrszd, what kind of magic do you use, and what kind of dog do you have?? We should all be so lucky as to be able to control our dogs so well. Our Airedale is not too bad, but holy smokes we could never get him to behave like your dog does! Lucky man, you are.

P.S. Any secrets you would care to share would be much appreciated. For example, our Jasper is smart as a whip and knows exactly what we want him to do, but will simply ignore our "come" command if we are out on the acreage at the cottage and the neighbour is up, and Jasper sees his dog. Off he goes for a visit (he is very friendly), and there is no stopping him until he is finished sniffing butts and stuff and loses interest. We even use cheese (his favourite) as a lure, but to no avail. On the trail with no other critters around, however, he will stick pretty close and come if we call him.

There is a lot to be said for a responsible pet owner.

I feel dogs are worth the time and effort to train, the biggest trick is to make sure they know not to and not give them the chance of destruction and it will be minimal.

My Shepard chased cattle, he didn't care about chickens but he liked to run cattle, he never would nip them. I tried to teach him not to, eventually he was constrained to a 3/4 acre parameter around the house and was not permitted at the barn nor outside of my yard.

He's a very good dog, he scares the piss out of anyone that walks up to my house and in the three years I have lived here nothing in or around the house has walked off, a few things back at the barn has though.

He scratched up a few pieces of molding in the house at one point or another and chewed up a few plastic remotes and spatulas, nothing of much value, but that's a small price to pay for security, I don't care if you have a monitored home security system with cameras, that stuff 90% of the time is never found again and insurance has to pay out eventually raising your insurance, I see a dog as a cheaper option.

Just my 2 cents

Well if I took all the money I had in him, a security system is prob cheaper but the dog is more enjoyable by far.

Sometimes it helps to understand why a dog is barking; a threat or just to get attention or something else. I became a part time temporary mail carrier when I was 17; postmaster had to get special permission to hire someone under 18 because he couldn't find anyone older in town to take the job.:D In a small town, in those days, almost no one had a fenced yard, dogs were loose everywhere, including my own part collie mutt. And even she barked at the postman, including me when she saw me coming with that pith helmet on and a mail bag hanging from my shoulder. But she was never a threat to anyone, and she stayed in our own yard. The one vehicle the post office had back then (for delivering the parcel post) was a leased 9 year old (1948 model) Jeep panel wagon with no driver's door, and NO muffler. Everyone in town, and every dog, knew the sound of that thing when they heard it coming. I'll never forger the time a big old boxer came charging out, barking, right where I needed to stop to make a delivery. I was wondering whether it would be safe for me to get out of the vehicle. Then that dog stepped on a sandbur with one front paw. He just quit barking, jumped up and put one front paw on the seat beside me and held up the other paw for me to pull the sandbur out, then he backed off and went to barking again.

We were at a family picnic a few years ago with or Boston Terrier Daisy on a leash. Daisy was very well mannered and never jumped up on anyone.

A man that knew some of the family, we didn't know him, walked over to a group of people that my wife was talking with and for some reason Daisy jumped up on his leg, I'm assuming to see what was in his hand. My wife pulled on the leash and scolded Daisy and in the mean time, the man poured beer on Daisy. Well,,, I thought my wife was going to take a swing at the guy. I intervened and got her to take Daisy to the car. I asked why pour beer on the dog when my wife was taking the steps to stop the dog. He just stood there with a smirk on his face until he knew I wasn't backing down and then he left.

The crux of the story, in my mind is, dogs are unpredictable and any dog, pit bull to poodle can do things that are uncharacteristic in their behaviour. Expecially when not in their normal environment like home or yard.

Security system is cellular. Records and retains everything for seven days. I have option to save any portion of what is recorded. No wires to cut and by the time they unplug it is still recorded off site which I can access anywhere anytime. I don't have to feed it, it doesn't tear anything up and I don't have any crap to watch out for. I worked in a plumbing shop for over nine years. Was around some of the most viral smelling crap you can think of. There was a dog pound on the base I worked at and we had to some times unstop the drains in the dog runs. All the stuff and every thing I came in contact with dog crap was the only thing that ever made me puke. I can't stand it. I just make me sick knowing the dog licks his butt and then people let them lick them like their kissing them. May as well just reach down and grab a hand full after their done dropping it and have a taste. I respect those who have them and take care of them and give them a purpose in life. But no respect for those who get them and let them run at will and don't do anything with them but maybe feed them every now and then. My cattle and chickens don't invade their space. Theirs shouldn't invade mine. Simple as that.
